Hockey players refuse to take Rs. 25,000 cash prize
Press Trust of India Last updated on Wednesday, 14 September 2011 12:56

New Delhi: The Indian hockey team on Wednesday rejected Hockey India's cash reward for winning the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy, saying the paltry amount of Rs. 25,000 each was not proper recognition of their achievement.

During a felicitation ceremony at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Tuesday evening, the players were offered the reward but they outrightly rejected it.

"We were offered Rs. 25,000 each by HI Secretary General Narinder Batra as reward for winning the Asian Champions Trophy but we all refused to take it because it is a very small reward considering our achievement," senior player Gurbaz Singh told PTI.

Gurbaz said it was not possible to draw youngsters to the game with such rewards.

"We did not expect such a small amount as reward, considering the fact that hockey is our national game. If such things continue, there will be a day when there will be very few kids interested in playing hockey. They would rather opt for cricket or any other individual sport," he added.

Another member of the victorious team said that such a meagre reward did not come as a surprise to him.

"These things are not new in Indian hockey. Now we are used to such step-motherly behaviour. This doesn't make any difference," the player said on condition of anonymity.

India won the Asian Champions Trophy by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan 4-2 via shoot out in the summit clash

We all know that Hockey is the national game of India whereas; cricket is the most popular game in India. Recently we have seen the debacle of Indian cricket team in England and rise of Indian hockey as they won Asian Champions Trophy. We all know the huge money available in cricket whereas hockey lacks it. We have seen the difference between the prize money which the cricket and hockey boards provide to their players, respectively.

In September 2007, India won both the Hockey Asia Cup and T20 Cricket World Cup. The cricket team received Rs 2 crore as tournament prize money. BCCI announced Rs 8 crore for the players. Players received cash awards up to Rs. 21 lakh from their respective state governments. On the other hand, for hockey players, individual greetings were sent by the President of India. IHF had announced an incentive for the team where they would receive Rs 1000 for every goal scored and lose Rs 2000 for every goal conceded. Most state governments did not even send a congratulatory note to the players, forget about prizes and rewards.

The central and state govt. too announced cash rewards along with land allotments for the cricketers after they won the world cup. Why the state governments paid cash rewards to the cricketers when they were already rewarded with Rs. 1 crore each by the BBCI?

After the recent win of Indian Hockey team in Asian Championship where they defeated the arch rival Pakistan 4-2 in penalty shoot out in an electrifying final, no rewards (not even praises) were announced for the Indian Hockey team. Even the reward announced by Hockey India was just Rs. 25,000 each. This price money has been rejected by the team as they believe it is a very small reward considering their achievement.

I do agree with their denial to accept price money.

They wont spend, but they want gold medal at Olympics.

while cricketers do nothing for the country and earn by 150K per match,

all they do is play for a Private sector company called BCCI,
and they are the heroes of this country.

just the luck of this nation :tsk:

Exactly my view too... They came up through hard issues throughout the tournament and brought laurels to nation.. Treating them with 25k is way too low for that great effort...

    Hockey is our national game.

    Chak De India !!!

It is really an insult to all the sports loving people of this country. While the corrupt and incompetent leaders eat away the national wealth, a paltry sum is being paid to the real heroes, who despite the confusion at home came back victorious.

A government who have employed Kalmadi to approve toilet papers worth fortune to treat our commonwealth guest participants should have the idea about the value provided before announcing a prize money reward, bah.

I guess the main reason why the players protested is not because they want money.Ofcourse they need money but they can do it for the country even without money if situation demands. They're very concerned about the future of the sport when its treated this way. They're more concerned about what impression this could set on the minds of youngsters who are aspiring to take up this sport
