@vstol jockey You are the sea guy here. So you can give a proper intro.

    Ideas:
    Current situation??
    Technology wise comparison.
    What we lack??
    When will we catch up.
How we will fare in case of a 1971 style confrontation, minus support from any external ally (say Russia).

You are here trying to compare apple with orange.

US Navy is by far 20 years, probably even more ahead of Indian Navy in terms of technology, warfare capability.

They are true blue water navy with global presence

Technology wise comparison: They have Ships, we have sailing steels.
    What we lack: Navy
When will we catch up: Tomato Catch Up.
How we will fare in case of a 1971 style confrontation: We will increase production of White Flags.

We will be able to hold out only underwater. Our subs will be able to do damage but will not be able to escape after that. Our surface fleet stands no chance. I think we shud not even compare the two navies.

While the difference between IN and USN is not really difficult for anyone to figure out. What's I am interested in is the difference and similarities in the training of saliors in both the navy.

What would it take for IN to emerge as a competitor to USN??
Do you see a future where we can do that.

What if we combine naval strength of Bharat + possible Asians allies like Myanmar, Korea, Vietnam, will we be able to keep USN out of Asia??
I mean will an Asian alliance be able to keep USN out of Asia??

@YarS How long do you think you can hold off USN using your navy without the nukes??

Bhai, if the ships are sunk then what will sailors do ? I don't think our sailors can swim 100 NM and will throw a bomb on their ships.
Training is important for military in infantry combat and during dog fights, but for navy, your ships needs to be as advance as possible.

As a defense force, I think navy stands no chance, even against their USN Deago Garcia force/fleet. But with Air Force, we can defend our territories very easily.

The countries you mentioned could not field a coast guard strength rust buckets. Even pan Asian naval alliance between Indian, Chinese, and Japanese navy could not beat back USN, if it mass its complete strength against these navies.

Only way to "beat" back USN is to establish Anti Ship cruise missiles and SAMs all along your coastline and keep your navy inside SAM cover.

Yes technology matters but I think training of the crew and sailors is equally important. Good trained sailors can manoeuver their ship out if any hostile situation and have more efficient control over wartime operations.

    Scenario is not comparable.
Take down cyber command structure. Then half of US weapons will become useless.

I think USCG is almost as good as IN. :)

USN is at least 40 years ahead of IN.
