I think this tanker capability is to refuel escort aircrafts alone.. Is it ?

Yes, the only advantage it gets, is the ability to refuel escorts fighters and extend their endurance. But we can't use AWACS aircrafts for general refuelling roles, since it takes away numbers of AWACS to cover the large area and reduces their operational life, if they will be operated in both roles all the time.

Not really. In a way this is like a Goal keeper who can score goals by taking Free kicks, but would you risk him taking free kick at 5th or say 10th minute? In case he does not score and the ball falls to opposing player, it becomes counter productive. Thus though having an AWACS which can also be used to refuel is an advantage, but that is not its main job and the role of refueler should be done only in case of emergency to refuel the accompanying protective planes to increase their endurance.

Assuming the cost in terms of money, range reduction / payload capacity is acceptable, this is not a very bad idea prima facie. Given that AWACS and refuellers are both strategic in nature and expensive, making an AWACS formation (including escorts) self sufficient in longer station time sounds appealing.

Heck even fighter aircrafts can do buddy refuelling now.

Of course the assumption here is - acceptable cost in money and payload and range reduction terms.
