The Indian Air Force is planning to buy two 2nd-hand Mirage 2000 fighter jets to make up for the losses suffered due to crashes earlier this year.

The Indian Air Force which has signed a deal with France for upgradation of 51 Mirage 2000 aircraft, recently lost two of these planes in crashes in February and March. Due to these incidents, its Mirage-2000 fleet was reduced to 49.

"We are planning to procure these aircraft from the French or some other Air Force which still operates these aircraft in its inventory as the production line of Mirages was shut down a few years ago," IAF officials said here.

The IAF would soon buy the two second-hand Mirages and put them for upgrades to the Mirage-2000-5 standards. Under the $ 2.3 billion upgrade programme which is under way with France, the Mirages in the IAF fleet will be upgraded to the '5' standards.

The first two aircraft are already in France for upgradation under the supervision of an IAF team and work is progressing.

The remaining aircraft would be upgraded at HAL facilities in India with the help of French officials in next ten years.

IAF operates three squadrons of Mirages and all of them are deployed at the Maharajpur air base.

The Indian Air Force is mulling the possibility of basing one of the squadron of the Mirage-2000 aircraft at some other base.

Nothing wrong with second hand jets I mean they wont be as advanced as the other mirages and will be probably expensive to upgrade but atleast they give you more aircraft in indias inventory

IAF seems to be run by dimwits now-a-days. instead of buying these two additional jets and then putting them to upgrade, it will be better to use this money to buy Rafale and increase the UE of the sqns to 24 ac each and reduce the number of sqns to two from three.

    hey...
these 2 r trainers... without these 2, new batch of rookies will not be able to fly mirage 2000 (upgraded).
do remember that HAL will take 10 YEARS to upgrade & IAF will be flying these even after that.

These 2 are just replacements for the 2 IAF Mirage-2Ks that crashed in an accident.

Long back even IN had to buy second hand Harrier trainers from RAF as nearly all IN trainers had crashed.

They can do that, but then best to leave Rafale out. Why do we then need Rafales?
It is strange, way, many members here want India to buy Rafales and 2nd hand Mirages which cost way more than new Tejas... shocking
And hy the way when the last Mirage 2K would be upgraded, it would be obsolete, it wont come with SPECTRA or anything

The IAF does not favour it, but had to order, they come with different specifications (which is understood) but why not incorporate these ideas in the Mark II. The same story repeats for Arjun tank, Can you not see a very common picture evolving? I just see the navy as being slight different
