'Imminent' terror attack foiled in France after police arrest group of suspected Isis supporters including teenage girl

An “imminent” terror attack has been thwarted in France with the arrest of a group of suspected Isis supporters who were manufacturing explosives for a possible suicide attack.

A 16-year-old girl, named locally as Sara, was arrested alongside her 20-year-old boyfriend and two other men aged 26 and 33 near Montpellier on Friday morning.

Local reports said the group were suspected of planning a suicide bombing in an unspecified “tourist area” of Paris.

Explosives and other equipment were found during searches of a home shared by Sara and her boyfriend, identified only as Thomas.

Police discovered 71g of triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a powerful explosive widely used by Isis militants, inside a makeshift factory manufacturing the substance.

The volatile explosive, known as the “mother of Satan”, was used in the Paris and Brussels attacks, as well as the 2005 London bombings.

Isis propaganda magazines have contained instructions on how to make TATP, which is difficult to detect, from legally available and low cost products.

The suspects were arrested after buying acetone, one of the key ingredients.

Sara had allegedly used social networks to express her desire to either journey to Syria or Iraq, or attack France, and pledged loyalty to Isis in a video posted online on Wednesday.

But one of her online jihadi "mentors" was working for France's domestic intelligence agency, the DGSI, and the intelligence triggered the dawn raid on her home.

The couple had planned to have an Islamic marriage before Thomas carried out the suicide bombing, with Sara then travelling to join Isis in Syria as a "martyr's widow", BFMTV reported.

The 34-year-old man arrested is suspected of putting the couple in contact with jihadis in Syria, as well as helping the teenage girl obtain a fake passport.

Bruno Le Roux, the French interior minister, said counter-terror operations were carried out in Montpellier, Clapiers and Marseillan.

Terrorism in 2016: Terror attacks in Europe claimed by Isis
A spokesperson for his ministry said the arrests had “foiled plans for an imminent attack on French soil”, vowing that authorities would continue to fight terrorism.

A statement said three of the four people arrested were suspected of directly preparing “a “violent act”, while explosives in the course of manufacture had also been discovered at the culmination of the two-week investigation.

The Prime Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, also praised the work of investigators.

“Faced with the heightened threat, there has been an extremely strong mobilisation of our intelligence services to ensure the French are protected to the utmost,” he said.

The arrests came a week after a suspected Isis supporter attacked French soldiers guarding Le Louvre.

Abdallah el-Hamahmy, a 29-year-old Egyptian man, claimed he received no direct orders from the terrorist group and intended to deface artworks.

France has been repeatedly targeted by Isis, whose militants launched a series of mass shootings and suicide bombings across Paris that killed 130 people in November 2015.

A supporter killed 86 people by ramming a lorry into crowds celebrating Bastille Day in Nice in July, and supporters have also carried out several stabbing attacks including the murder of a police officer and Catholic priest.

The country remains under a continuing state of emergency, which has been extended four times, prompting human rights concerns from the United Nations.

France's top constitutional court has struck down a contentious law brought in under the emergency measures, which allowed prison sentences for the offence of consulting “terrorist websites”, saying it infringed on the ability to communicate freely.

The 2016 law, approved after the attacks in Paris, was intended to stem the influence of jihadi social networks and online propaganda and made exceptions for purposes of research or informing the public.

In a ruling on Friday, judges said France had other laws at its disposal to protect the public from acts of terrorism and imprison Isis sympathisers.

Paris to put up glass wall to protect Eiffel Tower

Image captionThe glass wall would replace metal barriers put in place last year
The Eiffel Tower in Paris is to have a 2.5m-high (8ft) wall of reinforced glass built around it as protection against terror attacks, officials say.

The Paris mayor's office says the wall will replace metal fences put up for the Euro 2016 football tournament.

The project, if approved, is expected to cost about €20m (£17m; $21m) and work should start later this year.

The French capital has been on high alert since attacks by jihadists in November 2015 left 130 people dead.

Last July, 86 people were killed when a lorry ploughed through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the southern city of Nice.

The Eiffel Tower, one of France's most famous landmarks, attracts more than six million visitors each year and the wall is designed to stop individuals or vehicles storming the site, said the assistant mayor for tourism, Jean-Francois Martins.

"The terror threat remains high in Paris and the most vulnerable sites, led by the Eiffel Tower, must be the object of special security measures," he said.

"We will replace the metal grids to the north and south with glass panels which will allow Parisians and visitors a very pleasant view of the monument."

Mr Martins added: "We have three aims - to improve the look, make access easier and strengthen the protection of visitors and staff."

The project will also involve reorganising pathways around the tower.

Earlier this month, a man wielding two machetes attacked soldiers at Paris's Louvre Museum.

President Francois Hollande said there was little doubt it was a terrorist act.

The vast majority of people here know who the real terrorists are, rest assured. There is no confusion.

That's a good question. There are a lot of possible reasons for this.

France is the second largest contributor to the air strikes against the so called "islamic state" in Iraq and Syria ans is also at the frontlines of the war against terror in the Sahel with its Operation Barkhane.
France has been very exposed in terms of foreign policy and deployments of armed forces in other countries, especially muslim ones. Jihadists, terrorists whatsoever are motivated by the hatred of France as they see it spreading a form of active islamophobia.
They see all European nations as crusaders, kfirs, infidels, but see especially France as a nation with an explicite and aggressive anti-islam agenda.

There might be other reasons of course, but for me,those above are the principals.

The main reason France is being targeted is because France has 7-9% Muslims (maybe more than 10%) ,compared to around (or less than) 5% of UK, Germany, Belgium, and Sweden. They form a large enough monolith to get away with open hostilities, and in localized conflicts, even beat back French state. The factors @Vergennes is pointing out play a minor role as France has been second least willing major participant among NATO members of USA's "grab da oil" shenanigan in Middle east, and thus should have received less hate than many other countries: Poland, UK etc. It also does not help than French people have not been gelded like Nordics so their will need to be broken by terrorists. A Swede has his balls chopped off and kept in a locker controlled by Swiss government, so a terrorist would find no reason to bomb Sweden as they would willingly submit to Islam. A country which have some balls intact would attract more terrorist attacks.

7-9% .. A country open to more Muslims suffer more from it.. . ...?

I was of the opinion, educated Muslims will refrain from madarassa logic .

There is a direct established relation between percentage and behavior of Muslims.

This has nothing to do with number of muslims. The countries you list have no major problems with muslims, because they do not impose by forces secular laws on them, because they accomodate them. Just introduce some "anti-muslim" laws like veil ban, burkini ban,no hallal food in schools for muslim students and see how all things go.
