New Delhi: India has called off talks with Pakistan amidst rising ceasefire violations and Pakistan's meeting with Kashmir separatist leaders.

MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin cited Pakistan High Commissioner’s meeting with Hurriyat leaders as the reason for cancelling the talks.

“Pakistan's efforts to interfere in India's internal affairs are unacceptable,” Akbaruddin said.

The foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan were scheduled to meet on August 25 in Islamabad to discuss a roadmap for dialogue.

Other than that there have been at least 48 ceasefire violations from across the border this year. Of this, there have been 8 violations just in August.

Experts had opined that the violations were an attempt by the Pakistan army to scuttle the talks.

Pakistani envoy meets Kashmiri separatists, India calls off bilateral talks
    TNN | Aug 18, 2014, 05.48 PM IST

NEW DELHi: India on Monday called off the foreign secretary-level bilateral talks with Pakistan which was slated to be held on August 25. This development follows the Pakistani high commissioner to India Abdul basit meeting separatist leaders from Kashmir.

Earlier on Monday, the Pakistani envoy met Kashmiri separatists on Monday ahead of the proposed foreign secretary-level talks between New Delhi and Islamabad.

This invoked sharp reaction from political quarters in India with the opposition Congress hitting out at the Centre for allowing the envoy to meet the Hurriyat leaders.

The Congress had accused the government of doublespeak questioning why the talks had not been called off.

'Bilateral talks cannot resolve Kashmir issue'

Earlier, prominent separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah on Monday welcomed the upcoming India-Pakistan foreign-secretary level talks, but maintained that bilateral dialogue between the two countries would not resolve the Kashmir issue as people of the state were principal party to the dispute.

"We welcome the talks between India and Pakistan but bilateral talks cannot resolve Kashmir issue as we have seen that such initiatives always ended in failure over the past six decades," Shah said.

Shah said the Kashmir issue cannot be resolved without the inclusion of "true leadership" of Jammu & Kashmir in the resolution process "as we are the basic party".

    — ANI (@ANI_news) August 18, 2014 He said there was nothing wrong in Pakistani high commissioner meeting the separatist leaders. "India and Pakistan are parties to Kashmir dispute but we are the basic party. What is wrong if one party meets the other party?" he said.

Basit has also invited other separatist leaders including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mohammad Yasin Malik for consultations in Delhi on Tuesday.

shawl-saree dimplomacy was a goodwill gesture. it is not some kind of hard diplomacy. and usually when the leaders meet they exchange some gifts representing their country.

Exactly.. for the sake of Diplomacy... all this plays in he hands of our Diplomats while interacting with global community. Every time Pakistani Government does something stupid as this ... India gains at global level.... that's why India should continue to engage Pakistan at a diplomatic level...and play this ball game.

i would like to take on Modi on his words that they will take a hardline against pakistan instead of the soft approach of MMS govt

also if you think such things matter at global level - it dosent

what matters is otherr countries interest on either side

OPEC OIC will still back pakistan
    China will still Back Pakistan
SL will still play the 3 against each other (india china pakistan)
USA will still try to sell us more arms and still give aid to pakistan and it will still be used to buy weapons for terrorists & army
