    Fresh tensions in Indo-Russian
bilateral ties are bound to surface
soon as India is set to cut its Fifth
    Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA)
order by one-third. India will now
be inducting only 144 FGFA instead
    of the originally scheduled 214.
The reduced purchase size could be
    to accommodate potential interest
    in the Lockheed Martin F-35A
    aircraft, which had earlier been
rejected by both the Indian Air
    Force and the Defense Ministry.
    Both of these organizations have
    denied the F-35 rumors.
Significantly, all of the 144 FGFA
India now intends to purchase will
    be single-seater jets. Earlier, the
    Indian Air Force planned to
    procure 214 units– 166 single-
    seaters and 48 twin-seaters.
    According to sources, India’s
decision to reduce the number of
jets it will purchase was driven
    primarily by two overarching
    concerns: production delays and
cost over-runs, both of which have
    been major irritants in Indo-
    Russian defense ties. The first
prototype of the fighter jet is likely
to be delivered to India in 2014,
    followed by additional planes in
    2017 and 2019. Earlier, India
expected to induct the jets into
    service sometime between 2017
and 2018. Recently Russia said the
FGFA would not be delivered until
    2020.
Still, the news of India’s reduced
purchase is likely to irritate Russia
and it will be worth closely
    watching how Moscow responds.
    Russia has already delayed
    President Vladimir Putin’s trip to
India by seven weeks. Putin was
    initially scheduled to visit New
    Delhi from October 31 to
November 1 st, but will now arrive
in the Indian Capital on December
    24.
    India's Hindustan Aeronatics
Limited (HAL) is to build the FGFA,
a derivative of the Sukhoi T-50, in
India. India and Russia signed a
50:50 joint venture to build the
    aircraft in December 2011.

Dude the news is older than me in this forum... Somehow Genius(OP) stumbled on it for his fascination of the F 35 .. Meanwhile, the F 35 has been offered (twice) and rejected (twice) .. So I don't think anyone is going to offer it nor are we interested in buying it..

That's what I knew. But I wasn't aware of the cutback in PAK-FA....which is partly why I reacted like that. That coupled with the given info. in his post led me to believe that we have hitched that sinking band-wagon. In hind-sight, I should have looked for the source of the news in question. Phew.

    @rated r - :dude: wtf?!

It has been approved and highly appriciated, The party is due the day we start its construction. You will see for the first time that an aircraft will be assembled by car makers.

I am extemely sorry to inform you that while HAL called it outstanding design, they have told me that they are preoccupied with LCA MK2 and can't take up this project. So I sent it to another private aerospace player in India with a biz case that even if GOI/IAF does not go for it we have a very big export potential and I can use my existing company in UAE to create funds and make it one of the biggest export successes of India. Only problem is that in such a scenario itwill not be called an Indian product.
I have already lined up USD 200million for this project. and that is what has shocked everyone.
The game plan now agreed with my wud be manufactureres is that we will complete the CAD analysis along with CFD analysis. The design so completed will be created in a 100% scale wooden model and the RCS calculations will be done using ADA/DRDO/HAL facility. The 100% wooden scale model will than be presented to IAF & IN in a top secret meeting. If they accept it, Its fine. If they do not, we will create it as an export model.

:disagree: The "junk" is (from what we know so far) the 5th gen fighter with the best flight performance, be it speed, range altitude, maneuverability, with the best radar and the biggest payload from all similar fighters currently available or under development. Not to mention that it was the only such fighter available in this decade, without operational restictions and with industrial participation from our side.
So it's clearly the best choice we made wrt to Indian security and industrial improvement, we just needed too long to take the decisions and come up with a good plan of what we really need and want, otherwise we could have joined even in the development of the Russian version.

The cutbacks are not official and may have more to do with the minimum numbers of FGFA needed. There seems to be a change in the replacement strategy going on, since the Mig 27s might not be kept as long as IAF initially thought. With the recent reports and statements all of the Mig 27s (including the upgraded 2 squads) will be phased out till 2017 and replaced by MKIs. That means FGFA will have only Mirage 2000s and Mig 29s to replace and with the crashes last year, their numbers have gone down as well.
F35 btw is out of question for IAF, only the navy might buy them if it offers certain advantages (EMALS).

PAK FA is best stealth fighter in existence... would use F-35 for snack.

Good luck with the venture, by the way, would you calling it Super Ajeet (which shows it is an improved version of Ajeet, which as per what I understand it is not, but more or less inspired by simplicity of Ajeet) or you might consider naming it something different.
One of the name I suggest is Indradhanush (Rainbow) as rainbow has the 7 basic colours, this plane can do the all the tasks efficiently. Further, the word Indradhanush means THE BOW OF INDRA. Which as you know is not really a soft term.
