NEW DELHI - India quietly signed two contracts worth $1.4bn with Israel Aerospace Industries for the purchase of two additional Phalcon/IL-76 Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) valued at $1 billion and 10 Heron TP unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) during the recent visit of Israeli President Reuven Rivil to India.

The contracts were signed in New Delhi on 16th November in the presence of Brig. Gen. (Retd) Mishel Ben Baruch, Director, SIBAT, Israel Ministry of Defence and Indian defence secretary G Mohan Kumar.

An Indian Air force (IAF) official said the purchase of two AWACS has been pending for the past five years and the deliveries should be made within the next two to three years. “Phalcon AWACS are tremendous force-multipliers and we are having an excellent experience with them,” the official added.

A $400m contract for the purchase of 10 weaponised Heron TP UAVs was also signed with IAI. Deliveries to the IAF are expected to be completed over the next three years.

According to the IAF official, the Indian Heron TPs will have very sophisticated communication & intelligence systems, detection finders, signal parameters and emitter classification and geo-location capabilities, in addition to electronic surveillance measure for long-range automatic detection and identification of emitting targets.

The official added that Indian Heron TPs will be capable of launching guided munitions and lightweight tactical missiles. Currently the three Indian defence forces operate around 60 Heron UAVs but it is not known whether they are weaponised or not. The three Indian defence forces have a joint requirement of over 200 weaponised UAVs in the next 10 years.

IAI has also given a proposal to India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to jointly develop an advanced version of Heron UAV in India. However, the ruling National Democratic Alliance government wants all future UAV requirements to be met through the Make in India initiative. Israeli Searcher Mark 1 & II, Heron and Heop UAVs are currently used by Indian defence forces.

Seems like we are preparing for 2018 end war, till that time we will have
    • some Tejas,
    • some Rafales,
    • Apache,
    • Chinook,
    • M777 howitzer,
    • DRDO AWEC,
    • these AWACS,
    • Aircraft Carrier,
    • 300 Su-30mki,
    • 500 T-90SM MBT we ordered few days back,
    • Upgraded Bhramos,
    • S-400,
    • New Rifles for Army,
    • Predator drones,
    • LCH,
    • ASTRA,
    • More subs.
    • more destroyers
    • HELINA and a robust economy.

We are clearly heading for either landslide in 2019 for Modi or a massive damage on Pakistan. This is some serious upgradation and can make even Chinese nervous.

My assumption is that, first defense review with the current government. A question might have been asked regarding what deficiencies we face towards an all out war, and every answer seems to have been on the priority list of this government. Just look at the top priority deals that gained momentum once they came into power. 3-4 years from now, if the current momentum is maintained, our neighbors might have a tough time dealing with it.

    Good Day!

Yeah even behind the shadow of people bashing them daily this list shows a complete turnaround of Indian forces preparedness.
This is a massive list and will materialize and I am pretty sure with this much firepower we will go to war, it is inevitable.

The scale and pace of the upgradation does point at something nearing 2018 and 2019... IF he does manage something around 2018 against Pakistan, then he Along with be PM for next 10 years after that...

What is with Pakistan? are they buying every attack helicopter on earth?

    Z10
    AH1Z
    TAI T129
    Mi 35

They already placed orders for AH1Z and Mi35, Z10 was seen participating in military exercise and TAI T129 is coming in exchange for 52 Mushak trainers order by Turkey.

So will they have all of them or dump master Chinese under development helicopter for some Turkey deal? Do they have the courage to show the door to Chinese and if they did what will be the reply of Chinese? They are investing in Pakistan to own everything, take every deal and test all their product on Pakistan, a big deal for their own underdeveloped over hyped attack helo can damage future export prospects, Chinese wont like it.

2018? No way, most of the kit above will not be in service by 2018 or at least will only be present in very limited numbers. For all of the above to be inducted and properly intergrated within the military you have to wait until 2025. However, as I keep saying, post 2030 is the earliest India will truly be ready to win a decisive war against Pakistan, before then it will be very very bloody, whilst also keeping the Chinese at bay. As it stands today the Chinese would look to take advantadge of India's focus being on the West. Let the ENC, EAC, MSC and ANC be built up (which they are being) and then intiate such action on the Western front, it is not simply enough to have an edge on Pakistan (India ahs had one for decades now).

Another 10-15 years of an ever growing economic, geopoltical and military gap between India and Pakistan will ensure every objective being met (today one would have to make comprimises).

    Literally never going to happen.

This is what happens when you are beggers relying on handouts from every nation that comes along looking to buy you.
