Last time I read we were looking for "shoot to kill" not "shoot to decapitate" and 7.62x51 nato was what we were looking at. Is it this the new tender/search beside 7.62x51 nato?

Now as you mentioned I remember reading it too.
As PARIKRAMA mentioned , Let's see if this article has any truth (awaiting milspec & Hellfire replies) or just some promotion by Reliance.

This could be replacement for some AK47's and Vz 58's, the only thing being they really don't need replacement. Replacing the Insas with AK alfa would be foolish.
We should absolutlel stick with either a 6.8 or a 6.5. Going to a 7.62 x39 would be step back.

No Bueno for Indian Army as infantry rifle, but sure as hell I am buying one. Wouldn't mind seeing Para mil get this rifle.

they don't. But thats all AK Alfa is fit for, or may be replacing the smle and sten carbines with law enforcement. It doesn't fit at all in the Insas replacement game, unless they come up with maybe a 6.5 gren variant. There is an ak saiga variant in the caliber.

    @MilSpec

In case you already answered this question somewhere, tell me where to look.

Thing is, what do you think is the best bet for replacing the following :

    • INSAS versions for regular Infantry
    • AKM/Vz.58 variants for units like Rashtriya Rifles
    • Dragunov SVD for regular marksmen
    • INSAS 5.56 LMG for regulars
    • PK/PKM 7.62 MG for regulars (also seen in Para-SF hands in Kashmir from time to time)

    • Lee Enfield & some Springfield .303 rifles for Police (OMFG, how dare I for even asking??)
    • INSAS/AKM variants for Armed Police/CRPF & other CAPFs (don't mind guys like CoBRA, they already have X-95/MTAR-21)

    • MP-5A3/SD versions for NSG (do we really need to adopt MP-7A1?)

Plus any other critical requirement you see within the Indian Armed Forces/Paramilitary services.

    Tagging you also, @Abingdonboy

after developing tejas , arjun , dhruv and arihant if we are looking at imported solutions for basic assault rifles then it is a shame on us !

i feel bad when i read news like this and members getting all excited looking at imported solutions.

if we have a requirement drdo should develop it and get it throughly trialled by army and fine tune acc to their requirements. how hard can it be !!?

Imports should not be even considered in this regard .

personally i believe we should switch back to 7.62x51 , IA has operated slrs which chambered this round and they loved it as it packs a mighty punch..

Yeah, the AK-Alfa seems to be a pretty decent rifle. The familiarly with older Kalashnikovs and the caliber will help units like RR make the transition smoother.

I love MCIWS . What is its status?
It looks promising with multi caliber option. Does anybody know?

Well i hope the tender is divided among multiple manufacturers for faster acquisition. 2 million is such a large order.

IF MCIWS is a success then the above can be taken care of by it.

But for the immediate needs the off the shelf procurement of 60,000 or so 7.62mm ARs (as this RFP is about) can go to the Alfa or something along those lines. Having commonaility with the AK family will cleary help.

A dedicated Sniper rifle is needed, the IA has been employing a DM rifle for its snipers and that is totally inadequate, alongside a new generation of Sniper rifle the IA also needs to induct a new generation of semi-automatice designated marksment rifles also (for spotters and DM in squads)/

DRDO are working on something, I will wait to see what they come up with before considering what best fits this role.

Negev for the SOF units and let's see what DRDO come up with for the regulars.

Pretty much already being taken care of with INSAS (1b1/Excalibur/MK.1C) orders for local/state police. More than enough for these guys.

Commonaility with the IA will help but they are likely to go their own way.

The NSG really does need to move away from the 9mm calibre (yes yes the gold standard for CQB at one time), maybe .45? Maybe go fully to 5.56mm? There is a whole host of weapons they can look at and money should not be a consideration, they should get whatever they request.
