The Indian Army has been searching for a replacement of Kvadrat self propelled air defence system for a long time. But it has been unable to find a suitable option for the air defense of 500 vulnerable areas and vulnerable points across the country.
New Delhi (Sputnik) — In what could be a signal of faith in the Russian 2K12 Kub/Kvadrat self propelled air defence system over home-made surface to air missile Akash, India has asked global vendors to supply approximately 200 missiles for the system.

Akash was to replace the 3M9ME/3M9M3E missiles in the Kvadrat System for providing air defense cover to the mechanized forces during battle manoeuvres. Kvadrat is designated for air defense of the manpower and objects against enemy aircraft flying at low and middle heights both at subsonic and supersonic speeds.

The army in a document says that missile should be capable of engaging target in range of 24/25 kms with a single shot kill probability of at least 80 percent. The army wants the missile to have minimum 96 percent with delivery from 2018.

It is evident from the current purchase order that the army would have to continue with Kvadrat. The army finds Akash air defense system a bit slower and ineffective while on the move. It is considered that the reaction time of Akash is longer and has radar coverage of less than 360 degrees.

Last year, India had issued global tenders to Russia’s Rosoboronexport, Thales and Eurosam (France), Raytheon (US), Israel Aerospace Industries, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Tetraedr of Belarus, South Korea’s Doosan Group and LIG Nex1, Diehl Defense of Germany and the pan-European MBDA.

    Well

    1) The site in question is.... Russian I guess....So.....Let's wait for other sources and official government indicators......

    2) I would be very very very disappointed if we have to import this system from Russia at this time.....That will of course be a clear indication of Akash'es shortcomings....Wich perhaps can't be overcomed....So the army has to take the extreme step of imports....

    3) There could also be a reporting error... The system is question is very very old...It's Soviet Era.... Designed back it '59 though upgrade later...It Ancient now....I guess it isn't even in Production...Let's wait for some other sources and see what happens next....

    4) SeniorMembers...Everyone.... Please shed some light here....

    Don't trust Sputnik news either...

Is there a chance they only ordered missiles(not whole system) to replace old stock which might have "expired" while in storage....

    1. Yes, missiles are to be bought.
But the actual story is, Government has already given a go ahead to upgrade and modernise all that is possible from the Soviet Era equipment. It includes Kubs, and other systems too.

It is under the same upgrade program that these missiles are being bought. They will fill the gaps as additional responsibilities are arising.

    2. It has absolutely nothing to do with Akash. Akash , as per what is planned and what is expected , is delivering much more now. 200 Missiles being bought for Kubs is nothing in front of ~2000+ Akash Missiles curently on order to be produced.

Further the contract would not be awarded to Russia directly. A tender would be floated , and Ukraine , Czech Republic, Poland would too be giving competition to Russia.

No reporting error , all of Soviet Era Air Defence Equipment except the S125 are to be upgraded.

    This includes the Kubs too.

India had ~250+ such systems.Around 150+ are still in active service and rest under reserves.

200 Missiles means around ~75 would be upgraded.

It might be old but cheap upgrades would keep it effective untill QR SAM, SR SAM , Self Propelled VSHORADS are in production.

    1. No guarantee it would come from Russia.

    2. Shortcomings of Akash ?
That's like criticising a pigeon because it cannot take long flights like Seagulls etc.

Akash is much more better than what was it expected to be. That's why this single system is in mass production , and replacing multiple systems like S75, S125, Kubs, etc.

    3. Army isn't taking extreme step , its all planned. And does not point out anything else but only increasing responsibilities of Army and its step to fill the gaps.
