India would receive its first new generation Nerpa Akula-II class nuclear attack submarine, which is undergoing sea trials in Russia, by the end of this year, a top Russian official has said. “The Nerpa will be handed over to the Indian Navy on lease by the end of this year,†Director of Federal Serice for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSVTS) Mikhail Dmitriyev was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.

“Currently the submarine is undergoing sea trials, where the Indian crew is checking the functioning of its all systems and mechanism and are honing their skill for operating the vessel,†said the official dealing in foreign military cooperation.

Under a $ 650 million confidential deal, part of the aircraft carrier ‘Admiral Gorshkov’ package, Russia is to give India the Nerpa on a 10-year lease, to be inducted as INS Chakra.

The Soviet-designed Shchuka B (Pike), NATO codenamed Akula-II, is claimed to be Russia’s ‘quietest’ submarine avoiding detection by enemy sonars.

The Nerpa was to join the Indian Navy as early as 2008. However, an accident in November 2008 delayed the induction of the submarine.

During the sailing trials in the Sea of Japan, 20 people sleeping in the sailors compartment were killed by the deadly mixture of Freon gas due to the unauthorised manipulation of automatic fire extinguishing system.

It led to delay in the formal induction of the submarine by the Russian Navy for subsequent lease to the Indian Navy.

A court of inquiry had established that a cheaper lethal mixture of Freon was filled in the system, which instantly killed the sailors and technical staff of the shipyard.

Had there been normal more expensive Freon gas in the system, the crew would have enough time to put on gas masks and safely leave the sleeping compartment, the probe had revealed.

I think by delaying induction the real purpose of OPERATION OF NUKE SUB is not the prime goal

May be IN has other plans ???

Nerpa II will be a real jewel and will be ahead of other SUB in the region :nhl_checking:

Nerpa II and Arihant Will be More Like Training Submarines , The Real Game Changer Will be Arihant Follow On Submarines - Bigger In size Than Arihant , Can Carry K-4 SLBM's , 2 Already Under Construction [Currently Under Assembling at Vishakapatanam]

why mate include Nerpa II as TRAINER its Akula class bro, and Arihant too is petty good for start up definitely its not TRAINER just because we use it for TRAINING.

But i agree the follow up is almost double the size and will be more deadly :yahoo:

I Dont Mean It as 'Trainers' , but It will be Used for Training Purposes for Future Nuclear Submarines
The Arihant Is More or Less Like a Tech Demonstrator , It Is small In size .....Currently We Test The K-15's from Underwater Pontons...But After Arihant will be Operationalized , Test will be Carried Out from There....Arihant Can Carry 12 K-15's while The Follow On class Will Carry 16-24 SLBM's

Akula-II could be equipped with 28 nuclear-capable cruise missiles with a striking range of 3,000 km but the Indian version is reportedly expected to be armed with the 300 km range 3M-54 Klub nuclear-capable missiles since Russia is a signatory to the MTCR treaty. So my question is: Does India have its own submarine launched missiles that have good range of at least 2000km+?

Akula II is not a ballistic nuclear submarine, but an attack submarine (SSK). It will carry torpedoes and cruise missiles. Arihant is a ballistic nuclear submarine which will carry ballistic missiles like K-4 and K-15.

Nerpa won't be a trainer. INS Chakra in late 80s and early 90s was used for training to operate an SSK. Nerpa will be our main SSK.

Arihant on other hand will be for training purpose for now. But we will soon move to improved Arihant with newer hulls.

JN i believe nuclear attack subs are dubbed as SSNs and nuclear ballistic missile submarines are called SSBNs. So Akula is a SSN and Arihant will be a SSBN or a boomer. Please correct if i am wrong.
