The delivery of the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Air India is understood to have been further pushed by two months to December this year.

The ailing national carrier, which has been one of the first customers of this fuel-efficient plane, having placed orders for 27 of them way back in 2006, plans to fly them on medium-haul international routes.

Singapore is likely to be the first foreign destination on which Air India plans to operate two of these Boeing-787s, which it expects to be delivered this calendar year itself, airline sources said.

Besides Singapore, they said the other routes could be Hong Kong, Dubai, Osaka, Jakarta and Frankfurt.

While the deliveries were earlier scheduled to begin from October this year, after being delayed by over two years, the sources said now the first delivery was only likely in December. The launch customer of the Dreamliners is Japan's All Nippon Airways.

The prime reason for this delay is that Air India now wants the aircraft to be fully certified by the Federal Aviation Authority in the US before being delivered to it.

To questions on when Air India planned to launch its subsidiary 'Alliance Air' as a full-fledged low-cost carrier, the sources said it could become functional as early as the Winter schedule starting October this year.

It would be operationalised as soon as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issues the airline operator permit (AOP) to it, the sources said.

The national carrier's turnaround plan includes a 40- aircraft fleet, mostly turboprop aircraft or ATRs, for Alliance Air, apart from another 40 for Air India Express which would continue to focus primarily on routes to the Gulf and South and Southeast Asia.

Is this Air India the same airline whose stewardship no civil servant in the govt. of India willing to take charge of?

The same airline which has nearly 250 employees per plane whereas the industry average is something like 125?

The same airline whose grandma air-hostesses are being paid from my tax money?

hmm.. are you saying it should be privatized?? i like air india, don't privatize it, it will raise the costs on tickets. would be quite ironic, for someone with a Subhas Chandra Bose(well known socialist) avatar, promoting privatization.

As far as I know they're still state owned and state run, not privatised at all. Where did you hear this?

It is a PSU, just like HAL. A PSU is owned by the government (majority stake) but you cannot call the employees as government employees.

And the same airline which has a debt of Rs 60,000 crores!

And the same airline that carries politicians and bureucrats and their families on numerous trips abroad every year in business class FREE OF COST!

And the same airline that hires foreign pilots (instead of utilizing hundreds of qualified unemployed Indian pilots) at three times the salary! (The bigwigs get massive handouts from the outsourcing company providing these pilots. So why hire Indian pilots?)

The same airline which has the worst cabin crew in the world! (Why smile and take trouble? You're being paid a handsome salary whether you work or not!)

    Cheers!

I've actually seen an Air India air hostess shout at a passenger once.

The passenger was actually very thirsty and ordered 3-4 water bottles consecutively.

When he ordered one more, the air-hostess came to him and shouted from the top of her voice, "Sir, this water if for drinking here and not for taking home.".

That passenger was dumbfounded and so were all of us.

On the contrary, Air India has some of the highest fares on most of the routes it operates.

Go to yatra.com and see for yourself.

Private airlines offer far more competitive rates.

I'm sure Netaji himself would never have a loss making entity drain his country's resources given the wise man that he was.

If air India is the one operating it,
