The expertise exists in India but considering the ATAGS's own development cycle and the requsite R&D/testing that will be required on top of this to mount it on a vehicle one can't see it being ready before 2025, by that time 200+ foreign MGS could be in service.

We already have everything in house ready. ATAGS is a very successful partnership model which can be replicated. It's production ready by 2019. An 1500+ order for it will be the turning point for IA artillery future.

Archer or ceasar are very expensive systems. Can't we wait 4-5 years? in mean time we will be inducting Vajra/ATAGS/Dhanush/M777 numbering ~200 per year.

A mounted ATAGS will be developed but IA will pursue the foreign 814 unit MGS order guaranteed.

...meanwhile, resources are being wasted making a light-ish 130mm field gun mounted on the heavy Arjun platform. Did Army even ask for this abomination??

Despite what some may say, this joke was (and will never be) inducted into service, it was proposed at a time when the entire arty modernisation was stalled with no end in sight ie UPA era.

The K9 order has killed off any such prospect for the Arjun Catapult.

If OFB and IA embrace the new technology of 3D printing,we don't need 4-5 years,we can do it in just 6 months.

Quite challenging, isn't it a 52 cal system. It is pretty much a Giant.

This will be followed by the procurement of 1,850 ATAGS 155mm/52-cal towed howitzers.

Both Archer's FH-77 and Ceasar (anyone know what the gun is?) are also 52 caliber.

The ATAGS is really no different from any other artillery gun, like this Swedish FH-77, with forms the basis of the Archer System. Remove the gunner's seat, remove the wheels and stabilizers and add a pivot. That's what it takes to make a gun such as the FH-77 ready for being mounted on a vehicle. Making it ready to fire requires a bit of automation.

The question is more about finding a suitable vehicle to mount it on then anything else. Modifying the gun wont be too much of a problem. In fact, in this configuration it's almost ready as is. The gunner's seat needs to go, to save weight, and if possible some weight will need to be shaved off the other side as well to retain balance. But if that's not possible the gun can be enclosed like on the Archer and an internal counterweight added to the turret.
