That's the same weight range, that the army has for FICV and they also had shown interest in light tanks and tank destroyers before, but since FICV didn't took off, that was delayed too.
Yes the armor won't be a main priority, that's why they might want these besides T72 / T90, which means mobility is the key. In that weight class, 120mm guns are not possible either.

Lemme try to summarize the whole report..

Indian Army looks for new light tank

Military planners in the MoD asked the Army to draw up requirements for a light tank after China tested its homegrown light tank in Tibet. Deploying Main Battle Tanks in the border with China is restricted due to terrain. But China with light tanks much narrowed the disadvantages. India too wants to catch the advantage China is enjoying.

Though the details of new light tank is unknown.. But a preliminary requirement has come forwarded

    1) Weight should be not more than 22 T
    2) can be deployed higher altitude than 3000 mtrs
    3) main gun should be able to fire modern anti tank rounds
    4) capability to defeat any armoured vehicle at a distance of 2000 mtrs
    5) attatched ATGM
    6) not clear if the main gun should have capability to fire guided anti tank missile

I think Developers may find this BMP-2 with 105mm as an option but with some upgrades obviously.. excuse for poor quality images:smoking1:

No, too heavy since it's based on the T72 as well a light tank often is based on an IFV platform.

I think something like this would be perfect for mountainous terrain and would also be agile and quick......
