Suzuki and Toyota to make electric cars in Gujarat from 2020

NEW DELHI: Maruti's parent Suzuki will start making electric cars in India from 2020, in collaboration with fellow Japanese Toyota, as the two companies prepare for the government's ambitious plan to migrate the entire automotive fleet by the cleaner fuel by 2030.

The companies, which in February had signed a MoU to consider business partnership for electric vehicle products and technologies, said the agreement has been reached on the way forward.

"Toyota and Suzuki have concluded a MoU on moving forward in considering a cooperative structure for introducing electric vehicles in the Indian market in around 2020," the companies said in a statement.

As part of the agreement, Suzuki will produce the electric vehicles for the Indian market and will supply "some" to Toyota, while Toyota will provide technical support.

"Additionally, Toyota and Suzuki intend to conduct a comprehensive study of activities for the widespread acceptance and popular use of electric vehicles in India. Such activities encompass the establishment of charging stations, human resources development that includes training for after-service technicians employed throughout sales networks, and systems for the appropriate treatment of end-of-life batteries," the statement said.

Suzuki has already announced that it intends to construct a lithium-ion battery plant on the grounds of its recently-opened automobile plant in Gujarat. As envisioned by the agreement, in addition to lithium-ion batteries, electric motors and other major components would be locally procured for the production of EVs in India, helping the Indian government fulfil its 'Make in India' initiative, even in the field of EVs.
