Feb 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy personnel have allegedly attacked 12 fishermen from Tamil Nadu while fishing near Katchatheevu island, Indian officials have said.

The officials say the Tamil Nadu fishermen from Thondi in Ramanathapuram District, were fishing in a mechanized boat when they were surrounded by the Sri Lankan Navy men and thrashed with sticks.

They allege that the naval men also cut their fishing nets, dumped their catch into the sea, and took away their GPS equipment and cell phones.

According to the officials the fishermen were detained for more than two hours. The injured fishermen have been treated in outpatient department of a government hospital, officials said.

Sri Lanka Navy denies its personnel attack the Indian fishermen who are poaching in Sri Lankan waters despite warnings.

In January, Sri Lankan Navy personnel offered tea and biscuits to a group of fishermen from Tamil Nadu fishing in the Sri Lankan waters near Katchatheevu and given them a friendly warning that they are in Sri Lanka's territorial waters.

Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office V. Narayanasamy last month said Sri Lanka and India will soon ink an agreement to draw a fishing boundary in the Palk Strait to end the continuing skirmishes between the Sri Lankan Navy and the Indian fishermen invading Sri Lanka's territorial waters.

Indian generosity. We donated an island and fishing water to Srilanka without giving a thought towards the misery our own fisherman. We donated some big fishing boats to them as well. With Srilankan internal dispute all settled and no skirmishes in such areas, they now started to foray in waters. There is hardly any distance between two countries and by the time you reach deep water to fish, Sri Lankan Navy is already hiding in ambush to harass poor fisherman. I am no expert on that subject and maybe someone from Tamil Nadu can give us a better picture?

You've got the right idea. The minimal coastal difference between Sri-Lanka and India does lead to confusions regarding maritime boundaries. But the way they have been treating our fishermen kind of makes me think if we should start doing the same thing to their fishermen as well. Confiscate boats, valuables, release their catch into the sea and send them back empty handed.

What makes you think that we give a rat's a$$ about which implements are banned in Sri Lanka?! If you're looking to manufacture justifications, you're going to have to do better than that.

There is a professional protocol that maritime forces (competent ones at least) are supposed to follow when maritime boundaries are unintentionally beached. Unfortunately, for your side of the argument, looting and physically assaulting poor and unarmed fishermen is NOT professional protocol. It is bullying. You wouldn't want the Indian Navy to vaporize your navy into oblivion now, would you? Because that is what we understand as counter-bullying.

The way I'm seeing this now is our fishermen are better equipped and you have a serious problem with that. Rest assured, if your naval forces keep up their unprofessional conduct, if they keep bullying defenceless tamil fishermen; they WILL have to deal with the dire consequences that naturally accompanies such conduct. Be warned.

time to make a example out of shri lanka...

it is best thing happened right now... use this pre-text and put shri lanka in its place and cripple its navy.... it is time to say in south Asia India is the boss and if you don't fallow the rules... you can rest deep in sea...

with china coming their side these mass-murderers had got dreams and trying to be brave... teach them a good lesson.. it will not only be first step to become world power but also it will help us to dismantle soft power image

I think, the Sri Lankan coast guard should board such fishing vessels, perhaps one coast guard personnel can do this. This person will remember the people in the boat, and the boat will also be remembered. There needn't be any misunderstanding, later, after.
