Better to go for a light rail (metro) system, all these Maglev type systems have proven to be flops, if their new capital city has it they will be replacing it with Metro within 15 years.

Only the 4,500HP engines will have dual cab, right?

+ what will be the designation for the 6,000HP GE locos?

ICF flags off its new train set for Kolkata metro

Press Trust of India | Chennai July 4, 2017 Last Updated at 18:08 IST

Country's leading railway coach manufacturers Integral Coach Factory (ICF) today flagged off its new train set for Kolkata Metro, with the product boasting of state-of-the-art technology and claimed to be costing half of imported rakes.

Built on stainless steel, the cost of one Metro train set is about Rs 40 crore,"which is half the cost of any other imported Metro Train," a release from ICF said.

The train was propelled by 3-phase insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based electric propulsion system, which was "indigenously manufactured," it said.

"The coaches are built on stainless steel body. The gangways are much wider and almost look as continuous passage between coaches without any restriction," it said.

Further, regenerative braking saves energy requirement to the extent of 30 percent of total consumption, ICF said, adding, it will manufacture 26 train sets for Kolkata Metro.

Other features include full air conditioning, electrically operated automatic sliding doors with manual override for emergency, passenger talk-back facility, LCD display for Passenger Information system and LED Destination board.

"Emergency egress system, (evacuation of passengers in case of non-function of automatic doors) from outside the coach is an addition in this new train," ICF said.

AK Mital, Chairman, Railway Board, flagged off the New Train in the presence of ICF General Manager, S Mani.

One more player in metro transportation and that too at half the cost of a regular metro coach
A regular metro coach cost around 10 crore indian rs. but the coaches built at ICF would cost about 5 crore rs. and they look neat

Doesn't appear to be drastically inferior to world class metro trains being made in India, let's see how they perform, hopefully they function as well (or close to) the others and hopefully ICF have significant capacity to churn these out- could be a great option for some of the smaller cities/towns that are looking to get metro networks of their own in the future.

this is what I am saying, barring some exterior color scheme blunders they look comparable to the ones we use in delhi and at half the cost it's a bargain.

Comparable but still quite far off, but no doubt they can match th Germans/Japanese within the next decade if they persist.

yeah they can always improve in the next iterations.

One major problem is that this metro is designed for "broad gauge" and except for a few lines in Delhi Metro all the metro infrastructure in India is on "standard gauge".
So if they really want to make a dent, then they'll have to convert it to be compatible on the "standard gauge".

I guess the manufacturers and users of broad gauge metros across the world are few. This must be the reason for ICF to take a crack at less competitive, thus high cost of import coaches from abroad, in order to make a dent in this market. I am sure, after the success of these coaches with closed loop feedback and fine tuning of this product in Calcutta Metro, ICF will move to take the meter gauge competitors head on.

This approach seems familiar .... LCA ... AMCA .... lol
