    Awesome news.

    2 Questions.
    1. Can we expect an upgrade to P7 too ?
    2. What are its implications w.r.t. the deal with Japan for 200 9000HP locomotives ?

That is presently in trouble, with Japan not ready to reduce prices (~45 Crore/unit) and DFCIL has approached JICA to allow for open tender for 25 T/A locomotive of 7000 kW from Open Global bidding, by altering loan terms and conditions.

If the Japenese are unwilling to budge on price there is going to be a HUGE issue with WDFC come 2019 and it will be forced to operate below capacity if no 9000HP cargo trains are available to ply on it. Billions on world class infrastructure are going to be wasted as a result.

200 9000HP trains are required by 2019 (when WDFC fully opens), what is the solution now?

Won't go waste. Options are there. The Alsthom 12000HP will start coming from 2018. And GE 6000HP diesel locomotives too by 2018, These can be used as couplets.

We have our own 6350 HP WAG9 , of which two can be used with a single rake and our own WDG5 EMD powering 5,500 HP (Most Powerful operational single unit two stroke diesel engine in the world ).

    So solutions are there.

Trust me WDFC is progressing extremely rapidly and it would come on time barring a few court cases on some bridges between DFCIL and Contractor.
I think railways have sensed this issue of japanese locomotive some time back and have made arrangements. New WAG 9H are now being fitted with Long reach Pantographs to operate seamlessly on WDFC (remember it has higher Catenary for double stack operation) and the plan is if Japanese locos do not come on time, 2 x WAG 9H arrangement shall be used for upto 6,800 Ton trains.

But that said, WAG 9H is 22.5 Ton/Axle locomotive and therefore on a track that can support 25-26 tons/axle, it is capacity under utilization.
