    Over that, India also has developed 28 nm chips long back in 2011.:biggrin2:

    India's first analog semiconductor fab in Madhya Pradesh

    India already produces basic equipments like chargers and earphones. I will complete this thread (with info I have) within tonight.

    Otoh Since you are interested in semiconductors please keep us updated with every semiconductor and fab related activities of India. :biggthumpup:

    India's SoCtronics supposedly designed a chip for a Silicon Valley customer, but it was not manufactured in India. India does not have the ability to produce 28nm chips.

    The picture of an Indian clean room comes from ISRO. On its official home page, India's ISRO says:

    "While the design, assembly, testing, quality / reliability assurance facilities are already in place, the manufacturing facility has been upgraded from 0.8 μm CMOS 6” Wafer Fabrication to 0.18 μm CMOS 8” Wafer Fabrication."

    Thus, India's most advanced research facility (but NOT MASS MANUFACTURING) is only upgrading to 180nm.

    An Indian research 180nm is a far cry from mass-manufacturing 28nm.

    I will now amend my knowledge of the Indian semiconductor industry to the following:

    a. India still has no mass-manufacturing capability at any of the advanced technology nodes (ie. 28nm or below).

    b. India's most advanced RESEARCH FAB is being upgraded from 800nm to 180nm.

    Notice that the picture in the citation from the official ISRO website (see below) is the same clean-room picture as you posted. However, in the article, it clearly states Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) is being upgraded from 800nm to 180nm.

    So, this all has been shifted from technological capability to production capability now.
    Gujarat is expected to be home to India's first semiconductor wafer fabrication manufacturing facility by late 2017 in Prantijof Sabarkantha district. To be set up by anchor partner Hindustan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (HSMC) and copartners STMicroelectronics N.V. (France/Italy) and Silterra (Malaysia), it will employ a workforce of over 25,000 including 4,000 direct employees. The group will establish two manufacturing units at an expense of over INR 29,000 crore or about US$4.5 billion, each capable of producing 20,000 wafers per month. Technology nodes currently proposed by this consortium are 90, 65 and 45 nm nodes in Phase I and 45, 28 and 22 nm nodes in Phase II.[81] In March 2016, HSMC received ₹700 crore worth of seed investment for the project from Mumbai-based private equity fund Next Orbit Ventures (NOV).[82]

    Come on. Not this "EXPECTED" stuff again. They always fall through.

    It is not economical to produce semiconductors in India, because you don't have the ecosystem for it.

    Labor is an insignificant component of semiconductor manufacturing.

    The critical factor is the nearby location of semiconductor customers. For example, Mediatek is located nearby to TSMC. Thus, Taiwan's TSMC fabs are located close to the design companies in Taiwan. Practically all of TSMC fabs are located in Taiwan's Hsinchu Park. This allows for economical servicing and swapping of semiconductor-manufacturing machines when they are located in a cluster.

    I seriously doubt India can overcome the clustering advantage of TSMC's production fabs in Taiwan. In fact, Taiwan TSMC's worldwide market share has grown from about 50% to 60% in the last few years.

    It is extremely difficult to overcome TSMC's clustering advantage. Building a lone fab with outdated technology (including your proposed fab) will be a huge waste of money. 28nm used to be a leading node. It is not anymore. TSMC is moving on to 10nm at the end of this year or the first quarter of next year.

    The problem is that India is trying to chase a moving target. By the time that India builds a plant with initial 90nm with STMicroelectronics, it will be obsolete and the partners will lose huge amounts of money. Thus, manufacturing fabs in India are not built.

    Let's wait until next year. If it happens then I don't have a problem with crediting India with 90nm mass manufacturing. However, that is a big IF. I've seen other Indian proposals fall through over the years. This one may be different, but we'll see.

    By the way, you really shouldn't put posts on lithium ion batteries in a discussion on Indian semiconductors. It confuses the issue. They are unrelated.
