Yes if I am right the RFI was out for 7.62*51 assault rifle to many foreign manufacturers. In the mean time OFB pursued with its own efforts which is called Ghaatak and seems to make the cut.

I don't think any party responded to such an RFI. If at all Army will stick to this requirement (for 7.62x51 rifles), then the OFB offer will be bought.

There is a tender out there for 5.56x45 Carbines though...for which a foreign CQBR appears to be a likely winner (maybe Galil ACE-21/23 or an M4CQB variant). Unless it drags on and ARDE comes up with a short-barrel MCIWS/AAR version and that finds favor with IA (an extremely unlikely event IMO).

I thought Trichy assault rifle which is 7.62*39 calibre is called Ghaatak.PKSG says Ghaatak has been selected by IA. Now rifle factory Ishapore is testing 7.62*51mm rifle. Is this rifle also called Ghaatak? I am so confused. Some body please clear my confusion.

Trichy AR (from Ordnance Factory Tiruchirapalli) is a rifle derived from the design of 1A SLR (FN FAL), but chambered for the 7.62x39 Kalashnikov rounds - no one has purchased this original version.

After that, I think OFT made another Trichy AR, this time it being derived from a traditional AK platform. Have seen few images of this variant, and again AFAIK no one bought it.

Ghaatak is from Rifle Factory Ishapore and is basically an Indian-made AK, also chambered in 7.62x39 Kalashnikov. This is the OFB factories' most successful AK copy in recent times, at least it has been accepted by Police Forces (Kerala) -

The new 7.62x51 rifle you're seeing in this thread is also from RF Ishapore, but no one is sure what it's named yet. Some call it Ghaatak SLR (like Prasun Sengupta)...but I prefer to call it OFB 7.62x51 to avoid any confusion with the AK clone...or more simply as OFB 308.

Never fired such a gun myself...but from what it looks like visually. The recoil is pretty standard for a 308 rifle.

You can never get the kind of reduced recoil as you would from a 5.56 with a 7.62.

There was a recent procurement by atleast 3 agencies , like STF of Chattisgarh , etc for AKM based Rifles from " Indian Manufacturers". The total combined order should be anything like 700-1000 pieces.

These may be from Trichy or Ishapore.

Hope the final rifle selected turns out to be the real Ghaatak (khatarnak) in its true sense. :)
