Indian soldiers will get respite from simmering heat next season. Thanks to the Defence Laboratory based in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The extreme heat of climatic conditions specially in desert sector of Rajasthan, where temperature shoots up 48o to 50o c in summer adversely affects the performance of soldiers deployed along the International Border. The DRDO laboratory has come up with a solution to over exposure to heat which causes sickness like heat exhaustion, heat cramps, heat rash, fainting, heat stroke or even death of the troops deployed on active duty.

The cool vest or Jacket designed by Defence Lab Jodhpur absorbs body's excessive heat thus cooling the soft tissue and blood as it circulates throughout the cardiovascular system. “The body remains calmer, metabolic activity may slow and less body fluid are forfeited maintaining suitable electrolyte balance needed for proper muscle function and optimum physical performanceâ€￾, said Col S D Goswami, defence spokesperson.

The working principle of PCM vest is that, it has packs of micro encapsulated and gelled special phase change material (PCM) placed inside the pockets of the Jacket absorb body and environmental heat by the mechanism of latent heat absorption to provide comfort to human body in extreme heat. The comfort duration of this vest is for 2-2.5 hours after which recharging is required for 2-3 hours in deep freezer or normal refrigerator.

“The BSF has already carried out a user trial of the Jacket and we have received a positive report from themâ€￾ said a Defence Lab official based at Jodhpur. Soon the Army will be carrying out its user trial. The vest will make a positive difference for soldiers carrying on operational training, the crew's inside the Armoured vehicles, soldiers on guard duties and other professional duties in extreme climatic conditions.

2-2.5 hours of usability is simply not enough.

Good breakthrough. But as Patrician said 2-2.5 hours is no good. I hope this development programme improves this time over the coming years to at least 8 - 10 hours.

would be very usefull for our soldiers..I hope this research goes a lot further....

3 hours of usage and 3 hours of recharge sounds quiet odd though....

    Is this a joke??
If the jacket requires recharging every two hours, and the recharging time is 2-3 hours, and that too in a refrigerator, I don't find it of any use. It is going to suck in so much of electricity and Army units don't have more than 2-3 refrigerators, that too in canteens. I'd rather have air conditioned bunkers for the soldiers.

Army requires rugged solutions, not sophisticated ones like these.

it was hot in here on this thread that first post has turned red. then patrician, kronus, star wars and jaggi wore the "cool vest" and thats why their posts are "normal".

on topic, there is something known as project feasability/viability/usability in project management. i guess DRDO lab has totally forgotten abt this concept. recharging after 3 hours is not good enough.

Yeah, In kargil war, soldiers had to defend positions for as long as weeks. The initial search parties had to hide for weeks too.

In desert, every soldier will have to spend at least 20-40 hours on the front line, before getting any rest. I doubt how much such jackets will help.
