Modernity and control surface are unrelated. You can have tvc, but control surfaces go a long way.

BDL begins initial build of Astra Mk1 BVRAAM

India’s state-owned Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has inaugurated a special production facility to manufacture an initial production batch of the indigenously-developed Astra Mk1 beyond-visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM). The production batch is intended to begin arming the Indian Air Force’s (IAF’s) fleet of Sukhoi Su-30MKI’s multi-role fighters by the year-end.

Launched on 27 August at Sangareddy in southern India, BDL’s ‘dedicated’ unit will initially build just 50 of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)-designed all-weather Astra Mk 1.

Thereafter, a planned follow-on Astra production order is intended to equip IAF Mirage-2000H and MiG-29 fighter aircraft – and possibly the locally developed Tejas Light Combat Aircraft – supplementing the IAF’s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Derby BVRAAM system.

this is only initial order - sort of an LSP (limited series production) which will check to see
    quality
    reliability
    scalability
ways to reduce costs if any
requirements to change/minor modifications of the system for manufacturability
ways to offset/add eco system around manufacturing (to improve costs and time to finish)

    of the manufacturing process

Because it's still in development only and the MK1 version might not be used for operational use, because of range limitations.

Its in LSP. Will start mass production after that.

What range limitation? This is exactly what IAF asked for.
I never heard you complaining about MICA's range. Whats so special here ?

That it only has a range of 60Km, which is less than R77 and R27 it was meant to replace on the Russian fighters and why do you think LCA gets I-Derby with 100Km range, if IAF would think Astra MK1 would be ok?

What is the altitude ? Do you have other parameters to confirm it? All based on one source? You didn't answer my question about MICA.

I-Derby is a missile comparable to meteor not a competition to Astra.
All R77 in IAF will be replaced with Astra mk1 and mk2 which already passed the shell life.
