    First Lady Lieutenant General

Lt Gen Punita Arora took over as Director and Commandant of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. It was a return for the first Lieutenant General of the Indian Army to her alma mater. Lt Gen Punita Arora, who cracked the proverbial male bastion, in a brief interaction with the media said that AFMC has got a very sound foundation. “Raised brick by brick, by my predecessors, I am here to lay another brick so as to improve and make this institution the best in the countryâ€￾.
    Lt Gen Punita Arora
The General already has her priorities. She has identified research activity among her focus areas along with academics. “Ours is a need-based research that caters to peculiar problems, like problems faced by the troops posted in high altitude areas or deserts where they work under extreme conditionsâ€￾, said the former Additional Director General (Medical Research) who coordinated medical research of the armed forces at Army Headquarters.
Former Professor and head of the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the AFMC, Lt Gen Arora was commissioned into the AMC in 1968.She has pioneered the assisted reproduction programme in the armed forces for which she was awarded the Sena Medal. She also commanded a military hospital in Jammu and Kashmir. For her management of battle causalties, she was awarded the Vishist Seva Medal.
She credits her achievement to her parents and her husband, Brig PN Arora, who himself is an eminent dermatologist. Born in Pakistan, the General had suffered the trauma of partition. She came to India with her father Capt Kundan Singh of the Remount Veterinary Corps along with three kids, a blanket and a glass and started life afresh and never looked back.

    Shaheed Captain Jintu Gogoi

Capt Jintu Gogoi, L/nk Madan Singh, Rfn Jaideep Singh, Rfn Varinder Lal (17 Garhwal), Sep Rajvir Singh, Sep Dharambir Singh, Sep Vinod Kumar, Sub Harphul Singh, Sep Gazpal Singh and Sep Krishan Kumar (17 JAT) had gone into the battlefield with weapons blazing and made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.

Capt Jintu Gogoi, who was recalled from leave to join his unit 17 Garhwal barely a 12 days after his engagement, was brought in a tri-colour draped coffin. A marigold wreath on it. Watched by his fiancee and relatives who waited for the senior officers to pay their respects before giving way to their own sorrow. "There is no hope now," Anjuna said. Just days ago she had spoken to The Hindustan Times about hoping that since Capt Gogoi’s body had not been recovered he may be alive.

No tears fell from her bright eyes. The smile belied the shattered dreams. Yet the quiet dignity honoured the soldier more.

Eager for news of how the end came, she spoke to the soldiers who had been with him at that time. "He was leading from the front. There were three men ahead of him. His body was found barely 150 yards from the picket on Jubar Hills that he had been ordered to take. A full burst from a machine gun had caught him in his solar plexus," she said. The men of 17 Garhwal had charged into battle shouting ‘Badri Vishal’, their battle cry. Of the four companies that went into battle one officer and eleven jawans did not return.

Nation's third highest wartime gallantry award VIR CHAKRA was awarded to Captain Jintu Gogoi on 15th August 1999

Lt Sushil Khajuria, 18 Grenadiers, while leading his team in a search operation in the main area in District Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir came face to face with two terrorists. Displaying exceptional presence of mind he opened fire on them allowing his team to take cover. In the prolonged fire fight, the officer advanced from cover to cover and with unflinching resoluteness and raw courage, closed in and eliminated the terrorist from close range. The other terrorist brought down intense fire on the team. Sensing danger, the officer exhibiting conspicuous bravery of highest order immediately engaged and forced the terrorist to retreat. He pursued the terrorist, using the difficult folds in the ground, approached from an unexpected direction and personally eliminated the second terrorist. The officer, displaying exceptional sence of responsibility and camaraderie as a true leader unmindful of his personal safety immediately crawled forward to evacuate one of his injured colleague upholding the highest traditions of the Indian Army. For his act of conspicuous gallantry, exceptional leadership and camaraderie in the highest traditions of Army, Lt Sushil Khajuria has been awarded ‘KIRTI CHAKRA (POSTHUMOUS)’. Lieutenant Sushil Khajuria was born on 28 Aug 1985 at Samba (J&K). He completed his schooling from KV No 1 Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. Om completion of his graduation he joined OTA. On 20 Mar 2010 he was commissioned in ASC on attachment to The 18th Battalion The GRENADIERS Regiment. A second generation officer whose elder brother Capt Anil Khajuria is presently serving with 22 Assam Rifles and also has a younger sister.
Lt Sushil Khajuria joined the unit at Panzgam on 14 Apr 2010. He was the Ghatak Platoon Commander from the beginning and soon he was in the thick of the action and was conducting counter terrorist operations in treacherous mountainous terrain in the frontiers of District Kupwara Jammu and Kashmir. His first real encounter was on 29 July 2011, where he gave an excellent account of himself and the battalion was successful in neutralising one hardcore terrorist.
On 26 Sep 2011, based on specific input by higher formation headquarters and neighbouring formation regarding presence of an infiltration column of approx 5-6 terrorists in the general area Kopra, teams were launched to search and destroy the terrorists. Lieutenant Sushil Khajuria was leading his team in a rugged and difficult terrain with steep slopes and thick undergrowth. Simultaneously, he was also coordinating his move with other four teams, who were carrying out search. While carrying out search of a nalas, he alongwith his team came under heavy volume of fire. His buddy was pinned down by accurate fire from the terrorists. Realising that the terrorists were entrenched in an advantageous position behind a big rock, he crawled through thick foliage to a flank and spotted the terrorists under covering fire from his team.

Unmindful of his personal safety, he charged at the terrorists up slope killing two of them. Officer continued leading from the front. The operation resumed on 27 Sep 2011, another team whose leading scout was Havildar Ravi Kumar got shot by the terrorists at approx 10.30 hrs am and was severely injured. Havildar Ravi Kumar could not move and was effectively covered by fire by the terrorist. Lieutenant Sushil Khajuria volunteered to retrieve injured Havildar Ravi Kumar. He risked himself to move from his present location to retrieve Havildar Ravi. While crawling towards Havildar, Lieutenant Sushil Khajuria was fired upon by a terrorist and was injured. He later succumbed to his injuries and achieved martyrdom. A true “ Braveheart” who will always remain in our hearts.

The Living Confidence The Great Legend Major D P Singh

He was "declared dead" in an army hospital in July 1999 after a Pakistani mortar exploded just a meter away from him during the Kargil War. He was revived by a specialist, only to be told three days later that his right leg would be amputated below his knee because gangrene had set in.

Two months later, he was still at the hospital, weighing a mere 28kg, his stomach operated upon twice, a major part of his intestine cut, suffering partial deafness, and doctors giving up on trying to extract the 40 splinters still embedded in his body!

"When the doctors told me about the amputation, the first thing I told myself was now I will show the world how disabled people live. I was sure I will never compromise the way I lived. It was difficult for me to even walk initially. But over years, my mind and body found alternatives to work around the restrictions I was put through. Today, I can walk normally; my gait is as good as any normal person's. Yes, it took me 14 years to be able to start running," says Singh...

Death anniversary of ex Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi.

    Mon, 21 May 2012

    New Delhi

: May 21st will be observed as Anti-Terrorism day to commemorate the death anniversary of ex Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi. It was the same day in 1991 when our able Prime Minister fell into the trap of a suicide bomber in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. The attack was a fool proof planning of a terrorist group (LTTE) from Sri Lanka. Several people were injured in the attack and the worst that could have happened was Gandhi lost his life. It was during an election campaign when Rajiv Gandhi was to address people and he was walking towards the podium. On his way he was garlanded by many school children and party well wishers. Assassin Dhanu got an opportunity to mix with the crowd and execute her merciless, treacherous plan. Our able PM's murder left the whole nation in shock and emotional outburst. Since then, the day is celebrated in the honor of our ex PM. Terrorism is the most brutal form of crime that human beings can ever commit; it has also become a fear factor for Indians and the world. The purpose of celebrating this day every year is to keep our youth away from indulging in such mean activities risking their lives along with risking lives of several other innocent people. The responsibility of driving this fear out of our society solely lies on our shoulders. On the day, people are made aware of heinous terrorist activities and their after effects on the society. Debates, seminars, lectures, symposia etc are held at several schools and colleges to make people aware about the ongoing terrorist activities and ways to prevent them. This is mainly done to bring about a mass awakening in the society. All the public sector organizations pledge against violence and terrorism. Many NGOs contribute their share by spreading awareness about terrorist activities and its sick effects
