Every P8 in existence ,whether of USN or RAAF or RAF or Luftwaffe, either has a drone accompanying it, or is planning to have one. The obvious conclusion is that drone ,ideally MQ-4C, forms integral part of high altitude P8 ASW system as P8 may not be good at roles that require surface skimming.

The drone buy may be in absolutely necessary category.

It is better to be safe than sorry

Whether we like it or not ; we can keep the Chinese
ambitions in check only with US help

Not a formal alliance ; just an understanding that should Push come to shove
    US will help India

The LEMOA was a part of this growing partnership

With the kind of money that China has and add to it the Teeming
Millions of Jihadi Hordes of Pakistan
    we do need the USA

That is known as being prepared for the Worst case scenario

At this very moment ; China is creating problems for us in Sikkim

So anybody who still doubts whether we need USA should
    look at Chinese behaviour

Also look at the Indian army response. We went in and captured 3 KM of their land.

The "menace" of China is highly exaggerated, sure China is a problem but one that can be handled by India alone, the threat posed from China is not so great that it warrents turning India into a vassal state in such a case by worrying so much about succumbing to a great power India will sell its soul to the ultimate great power the US, that's not a deal worth taking. India must protect its strategic autonomy above all else.

+ if China is such a great threat why is India (under Modi) interested in buying fighters that will have no use against China (F-16/Gripen)? The Rafale is the ultimate answer to the Chinese from a fighter perspective but the GoI/MoD aren't even remotely interested.

Right but the IN is looking to throe $2-3 BILLION USD at 22 Guardians? The MQ-4C I can understand by the Guardian? What a waste of money.

I do not think $2-3 Billion for 22 Guardians a big amount. For drones, you need more extensive ground and communication infra than for plain jets. Unless you are advocating that we should let Americans control our drones from USA base stations, we would need full ground and communication infra built in India.

These drones are complements to P8Is, and we needed them, as is evident from practice world over. Probably we opted for MQ-9s ,rather than MQ-4Cs, because USA may be insistent on having control on MQ-4Cs ,if we buy them, like they are insistent that all F-35s have to send data to central servers of LM.

You could not fault government for what is ,practically, a compulsory buy.

The problem is that with a flip of a button, things can be shut down if needed, at will.

Do you know they can do that for any Israeli drones in our inventory.
