Lashkar-e-Taiba terror alert in Gujarat cities, three other states

AHMEDABAD: A Central Intelligence Bureau alert has warned of a possible terror strike in four states - Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab and Haryana. Ahmedabad and Jamnagar are the two Gujarat cities that are possible targets, according to top state police officials.

The intelligence alert, terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba has already conducted recce and could carry out terror attacks soon. What sets this terror input apart is that it carries specific details about possible targets.

While Ahmedabad had been rocked by serial bomb blasts in 2008, Jamnagar has always been treated with care as it houses several sensitive installations like oil refineries.

The Jamnagar superintendent of police has intimated officials of Navy, Coast Guard, CISF and security personnel of Reliance and Essar, which have refineries in the region, and Indian Oil, which operates a pipeline. "A joint meeting was held with senior officials of police, paramilitary forces and the refineries. All precautionary measures have been taken and coordination has been discussed. The coastal belt security has also been put on high alert.

Phones of all terror suspects are being monitored," said police sources. The in-charge director general of police of Gujarat, Chittaranjan Singh, said: "We are not leaving any thing to chance. Jamnagar police, Ahmedabad police commissioner and crime branch has joined the statewide security operation."
