Iran says could deploy navy near U.S. coast

    TEHRAN | Tue Sep 27, 2011 9:11pm IST
(Reuters) - Iran raised the prospect on Tuesday of sending military ships close to the United States' Atlantic coast, in what would be a major escalation of tensions between the long-standing adversaries.

"Like the arrogant powers that are present near our marine borders, we will also have a powerful presence close to American marine borders," the head of the Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 31st anniversary of the start of the 1980-1988 war with Iraq, Sayyari gave no details of when such a deployment could happen or the number or type of vessels to be used.

The declaration comes just weeks after Turkey said it would host a NATO early warning radar system which will help spot missile threats from outside Europe, including potentially from Iran. The decision has angered Tehran which had enjoyed close relations with Ankara.

And it comes a few months after Iran sent warships through the Suez canal, after the fall of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the first time the Islamic Republic had deployed navy vessels in the Mediterranean.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to stop it getting nuclear weapons. Tehran denies it is developing nuclear arms saying its atomic programme is for purely peaceful purposes.

Iran has dismissed the threats, warning that it will respond by hitting U.S. interests in the Gulf and Israel if any such attack happened.

Analysts say Tehran could retaliate by launching hit-and-run strikes in the Gulf and by closing the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway where about 40 percent of all traded oil passes.

The Islamic state often launches military drills in the country to display its military capabilities amid persistent speculation about a possible U.S. or Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

US, UK preparing to strike Iran?

LONDON: Britain's armed forces are stepping up contingency planning for potential military action against Iran, amid mounting concern about Tehran's nuclear enrichment programme, a media report said on Thursday.

The ministry of defence believed the US may decide to fast-forward plans for targeted missile strikes at some key Iranian facilities. The Guardian daily quoting British officials said that if Washington presses ahead it will seek, and receive, UK military help for any mission, despite some deep reservations within the coalition government.

The British military planners of a potential attack are examining where best to deploy Royal Navy ships and submarines equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles over the coming months as part of what would be an air and sea campaign, the report said. The US would ask permission to launch attacks from Diego Garcia, the British Indian Ocean territory, which the Americans have used previously for conflicts in the Middle East.

US officials are likely to seize on next week's report from the IAEA, which is expected to provide fresh evidence of a possible nuclear weapons programme in Iran.

Quoting Whitehall officials , the paper said Iran has proved "surprisingly resilient" in the face of sanctions, and sophisticated attempts by the west to cripple its nuclear enrichment programme had been less successful than first thought.

No they will not be able to confront Iran as it is not Libya and after incurring huge expenditures in Afghanistan and Iraq, it will not be viable. But, if they ever do so it will be a huge mistake and will probably be a blessing in disguise for Pakistan who will be relived of the pressure in Afghanistan. One of the biggest mistakes of Bush WOT was going into Iraq, which allowed the Taliban to regroup.

Makes my blood boil when I see this. Some people say that we wont go in. But if the (desperate) US are there then ofcourse our country will be dragged in. I see no threat from Libya, even if they did have nuclear weapons, so what, everyone has nuclear weapons. Do they expect Iran to attack the US and UK, this is just some BS stratedgy so we can get out of Debt.

It even said on RT that it was probably going to happen. Just waiting for the BBC to mention it. If this war were to happen it will be unlike anything else we have faced including the US.

The UK will work to "exert constant, increasing pressure" on Iran over its nuclear programme, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said.

He spoke amid growing concern about Iran's nuclear weapons capability.

Mr Clegg said a regime with nuclear weapons - and "flouting" international law - would be "a very, very bad thing for peace and security in our world".

He said Britain would not "take any options off the table", but would continue to seek a negotiated solution.

Next week, the International Atomic Energy Agency will publish a report on Iran's nuclear activities.

It is expected to contain fresh evidence of weapons experiments - although Tehran continues to insist its nuclear programme is peaceful and aimed at producing energy and for medical purposes.

    'Deaf and blind'

US President Barack Obama told reporters at the G20 summit in Cannes he had discussed the situation in Iran with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

He said they had agreed on "the need to maintain the unprecedented pressure on Iran to meet its obligations".

    Deputy Prime Minister
During a visit to RAF personnel in Lincoln, the deputy PM said there was a "real threat of a nuclear armed Iranian regime which has proven to be completely deaf and blind to what the rest of the international community wants".

He said: "Iran with nuclear weapons, flouting the international community, flouting countless United Nations resolutions, flouting a near universal consensus in the international community, would be a very, very bad thing for peace and security in our world.

"So we must work tirelessly with our partners in Europe, the United States and elsewhere to continue to do what we have done for a long time now, which is to apply pressure on the one hand, and also reach out through engagement with the other.

"That continues to be our strategy. We want a negotiated settlement, but clearly we take no options off the table."

Mr Clegg said that if the Iranian regime could prove it was only engaged in a civil nuclear programme then the UK would co-operate with it.

In a statement, Downing Street restated its commitment to "a dual-track strategy of pressure and engagement" and said it was not advocating military action.

There have been reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pushing his cabinet to back a military strike on Iran's over the suspected weapons programme.

Iran's military chief, General Hassan Firouzabadi, said his country would "punish" any Israeli strike against it.
