    @Sancho

    Well summarized, this pretty much sums up the apathy of the political elite towards the armed forces of the country. This goes to show that nothing is impossible, when it comes to scoring political browny points, but when it comes to funding the requirements of the armed forces all the funding evaporates into thin air.

    Agree on most points. Strongly disagree on privatisation. All privatisation attempts of govt monopoly sectors will give the impression that private parties are sole beneficiaries. While private parties are indeed beneficiaries financially as they get readymade markets, the nation benefits in efficiency driven by the same profit motive. I do not see any negative in that. All you have to see is the state of OFBs and our forever under trial products.

    The rot is much deeper that the political class. In fact I say the bigger problem is the corrupt forces.

    If Russia is tripling IL-76 cost why can't we use some western platform after all the radar and subsystems are western.

    And as for this thread

    Yes IAF is heading down a bad path

    Defence budgets are not growing fast enough as annual military equipment inflation

    Squadrons being retired every year with few replacements in sight.

    Transport wing in biggest crisis but because transports not sexy enough as fighter jets people overlook it.

    Govt has no money to do any of 3.

    We need C295 more importantly than Gripen/F16 as frankly speaking we are not going to war anytime soon and transports are required more in peace and less in war for nation building and etc stuff.

    Then we need more Rafale and the single engine fighter whichever we get.

    In heavy it's upto Russia it they make Su57 or they fail. Then India can decide.

    Good things in IAF-

    SAM systems
    Helicopters.
    Heavy lifters
