    ISRO mulls developing higher capability communication satellites

    ISRO is planning to develop communication satellites in higher frequency bands and power and data handling capacity in the range of 100 Gigabits per second to meet the growing demands of broadband internet and rural telecom connectivity, ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan said today.

    Radhakrishnan also said the premier space research organisation is looking for suitable foreign partners to acquire the technology and upgrade ISRO’s current satellite platforms to meet the future demands.

    “For the future, we are looking for communication satellites in the higher frequency bands with about 15 KW of power and data handling capacity in the range of 100 Gigabits per second that can meet the ever growing demand in the country towards broadband internet, rural telecom connectivity etc,” the chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation said. He was speaking at the convocation of BITS-Pilani Hyderabad campus.

    Besides launching new satellites, the organisation has also plans of replacing the ageing satellites and enhance the observation capability to the level of 0.25 m spatial resolution and provide new capability for imaging from geo stationary orbit with 50 m spatial resolution, he said.

    ISRO is also partnering with Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA to jointly develop a dual frequency microwave imaging satellite by 2020, Radhakrishnan said. “In this scheme of alliance, ISRO is responsible for the overall satellite platform, S Band synthetic aperture radar and the launch of the satellite by GSLV,” he explained.

    On the moon mission, he said India is in the process of developing its own Lander-module and lunar rover as well as orbiter craft for Chandrayaan-2 that is targeted for launch by GSLV within the next three years. Elaborating on the Mars mission, the ISRO head stated that the Mars orbiter space aircraft has traversed nearly 88 per cent distance along its designated path to the red planet. “The next operational milestone is the insertion of the spacecraft into the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014. If successful, India will be the first Asian country to orbit a spacecraft around planet Mars and the first country in the world to achieve this in the first attempt,” he said.

    According to him, a number of critical technologies are being developed for a possible human spaceflight in the future.

    The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is working on a new-generation launch vehicle, which can orbit a four-tonne communication satellite from Indian soil, according to N. Prahlad Rao, Director, Satellite Communications and Navigation Programme, ISRO.

    He was speaking at the graduation day of the National Institute of Engineering (NIE) here on Saturday.

    Mr. Rao said ISRO had established expertise in providing end-to-end solution from drawing board to placing the satellites in orbit. Almost all components required to assemble the space systems were developed in-house. “Only some payload components are imported, but the journey has not been easy,” he said.

    “In case of cryogenic engine development, the cutting-edge technology was developed from scratch, but it took more than the anticipated time. However, ISRO ultimately succeeded in realising this crucial technology and with these successes in the background, it was working on a new generation launch vehicle to carry and orbit a 4-tonne communication satellite,” he said.

    Describing the forthcoming projects, Mr. Rao said the coming year was going to be one of navigation as GAGAN, a system-based GPS augmentation was already operational and would bring in improvements in the operation of civil aviation routes.

    “India’s regional navigation programme, IRNSS, is going to be operational and this will be a system operating independent of any foreign systems like GPS and will make India self-reliant in this area,” according to Mr. Rao. He said there were around 25 spacecraft orbiting earth and providing services in the area of communication, meteorology, remote sensing and navigation and the benefits of these efforts are already reaching common man in this country. “It is taken for granted that any point-to-point communication is just a push button away. But behind the scenes, ISRO communication satellite is providing the crucial connectivity. When cyclone Phalin made landfall in Odisha recently, not one life was lost, thanks to the contribution from space technology, which was playing an active role in disaster management,” Mr. Rao added.

    December launch plan to improve transponder supply
    National space agency ISRO has decided to launch one of its upcoming communication satellites, GSAT-16, six months earlier than planned.

    The 3,100-kg spacecraft, meant to support public and private television and radio services, large-scale Internet and telephone operations, was originally planned to be flown up around June 2015 on a European Ariane-5 launcher.

    The decision to advance GSAT-16 launch came after the older INSAT-3E expired in March this year, according to ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan.

    The plan to move an ISRO mission ahead is almost unprecedented. “GSAT-16 will replace INSAT-3E [in the same space orbit at 55 degrees East longitude]. It was planned to be launched in the middle of 2015. After 3E was decommissioned in April, we advanced GSAT-16, which will now go in December this year,” he told The Hindu recently.

    The assembly venue in Bangalore, the ISRO Satellite Centre or ISAC, is ready with the spacecraft. “Advancing a satellite by five to six months is a difficult job, but we did it. We also got a slot from Arianespace (launch company) and as of now, we are talking of a launch (around) December 6,” he said. An earliest launch would otherwise have been April 2015.

    GSAT-16 will offer 24 transponders in the C-band, 12 in the extended C-band and another 12 in the Ku band.

    Transponder shortfall

    Over the last couple of years, the space agency has been trying hard to augment transponder capacity — which is about 190 on its own fleet — to meet increasing demand from commercial and public service users. It also had to lease 90 transponders on foreign satellites to meet its shortfall.

    Last year, the government approved an allocation of Rs. 865.5 crore towards building GSAT-16, the fee for its foreign launch and insurance; the latter is taken when ISRO uses a foreign launch.

    ISRO had to opt for an outside launch as Indian rockets PSLV and the present GSLV cannot lift satellites weighing above 2,000 kg. ISRO is developing the next big launcher, GSLV-MkIII, which can put satellites of up to 4 tonnes in orbit.

    The first test flight of MkIII is to be taken up after the ongoing Mars Orbiter Mission reaches its crucial milestone, that of orbiting Mars, on September 24.

    Satish Dhawan Space Centre gears up for launching PSLV-C26

    Nellore: Satish Dhawan Space Centre is gearing up for the launch of PSLV-C26 with IRNSS-1C satellite on board on October 9. Shar director Dr M.Y.S. Prasad said the launch will take place from the first launching pad in Shar. He attributed the success of Mangalyaan to all the scientists of ISRO.

    He said that the achievement is a great motivation to explore the outer space further. With regard to PSLV-C26, he said that three stages of the rocket have been assembled and the satellite, which was received from Bengaluru two weeks ago, will be placed in the fourth stage next week.

    Meanwhile, first generation space scientist A. Sivadhanu Pillai recalled the efforts of late Satish Dhawan in establishing the space port in Sriharikota while addressing 97th birth anniversary of Satish Dhawan at Brahmaprakash Hall in Shar on Thursday.

    Taking part in the event as chief guest, he said that they have developed indigenous technology for space programmes after other countries refused to share the technology.

    Earlier, he paid floral tributes to the statue of Satish Dhawan. Shar employees donated blood under the auspices of Red Cross on the occasion. Shar Associate director Seshagiri Rao, group director Vijaya Saradhy, scientists Subba Rao, Ranganadhan, Murthy and controller J.V. Raja Reddy were present.

    चेन्नई। भारतीय अंतरिक्ष अनुसंधान संगठन के फौलादी इरादों को भीषण तूफान हुदहुद भी नहीं हिला सका है। आंध्रप्रदेश और ओडिशा के तटीय इलाकों में तूफान से हुई भीषण क्षति के बावजूद इसरो सोमवार सुबह 0632 बजे से श््रीहरिकोटा से अंतरिक्ष में देश के तीसरे नैवगेशन सेटैलाइट(उपग्रह) आईआरएनएसएस-1 सी के प्रक्षेपण की 67 घंटे की उल्टी गिनती शुरू हो गई। इस बात की पुष्टि इसरो ने रविवार रात की ।

    इसरो की वेबसाइट पर जारी जानकारी के अनुसार संगठन के लॉन्च ऑथराइजेशन बोर्ड ने पीएसएलवी-सी26/आईआरएनएसएस.1सी के प्रक्षेपण की उल्टी गिनती को पूर्व निर्धारित कार्यक्रम के अनुसार शुरू करने को सहमति दे दी है। इस सेटैलाइट को 16 अक्टूबर को प्रक्षेपित किया जाना है। इसरो के अनुसार लॉन्च व्हीकल पीएसएलवी के एक्सएल वर्जन से इस उपग्रह को प्रक्षेपित किया जाएगा। इस वर्जन का सातवीं बार प्रयोग किया जाएगा। एसएचएआर रेंज के लॉन्च पैड पर मौसम का कोई असर नहीं होता है।
    इसरो ने भारी बारिश के बीच 22 अक्टूबर 2008 को इसी पैड से चंद्रयान मिशन का प्रक्षेपण किया था। उस समय भी पीएसएलवी एक्सएल वर्जन का प्रयोग प्रक्षेपण में किया गया था। इसके अलावा मंगल मिशन को भी यहीं से भेजा गया था। -

    Brilliant, just 1 more to go before IRNSS can be activated.

    Total 7 satellites will be launched for IRNSS, providing coverage for all of Indian landmass and 1,500km around India. This will remove
    the need for reliance on US GPS for missiles of somewhat strategic nature like Nirbhay LACM. We can put IRNSS and GLONASS as
    dual redundancy on a single chip (like the G30M) and then boost the signal accuracy with an augmentation system like GAGAN.

    GSLV Mk III launch within 45 days: ISRO Chairman

    SRIHARIKOTA: The launch of GSLV Mark III — one of Indian Space Research Organisation's biggest project this year — was likely within 45 days, its Chairman K Radhakrishnan said here today.

    Addressing from the Mission Control Room after the successful launch of IRNSS 1C, he said the next launch was the most awaited launch of GSLV Mark III.

    While another communication satellites GSAT 16 with 48 transponders was to be launched on board Ariane 5 from the French Guyana in December, ISRO would launch the next in the IRNSS series IRNSS 1D in the same month, he said.

    GSLV Mk-III will facilitate launching of four ton class of communication satellites to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit, benefiting all sections of the society, including remote and far-flung areas of the country.

    General Description -


    Semi-cryogenic project envisages the design and development of a 2000 kN semi-cryogenic engine for the future heavy lift launch vehicles and re-usable launch vehicles (RLV). Semi cryogenic engine uses a combination of liquid oxygen (LOX) and ISROSENE as propellants which are eco-friendly and cost effective.

    The realization of the engine involves the development of many new critical technologies namely Special Materials and Coatings, Brazing process, prevention of coking, Kerosene Refinement, Seals And Bearings for Turbo Pump, Combustion Instability and Control Components. 1,798 crore has been cleared for the project by the Union Cabinet on December 19, 2008.

    The liquid stages of PSLV and GSLV engines use toxic propellants that are harmful to the environment. The trend worldwide is to change over to eco-friendly propellants.

    Liquid engines working with cryogenic propellants (liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen) and semi cryogenic engines using liquid oxygen and kerosene are considered relatively environment friendly, non-toxic and non corrosive. In addition, the propellants for semi-cryogenic engine are safer to handle and store. It will also reduce the cost of launch operations.

    The 2000 kN SCE is envisaged to initially replace the L-110 core stage of the GSLV Mk-3 allowing an upgraded version of the launcher to lift a 6 ton payload into a GTO, instead of the current 4 ton. Besides serving as the main building block for expendable launchers, the SCE will also be used to power a Two Stage to Orbit (TSTO) launcher being actively researched by ISRO.

    Progress -

    ISRO ANNUAL REPORT 2013-14

    "Realization of semi-cryogenic engine involves the development of performance-critical metallic and non-metallic materials and related processing technologies.

    23 metallic materials and 6 non-metallic materials have been developed. Characterisation of injector elements and hypergolic slug igniters with different proportion of Tri-ethyl Aluminium and Tri-ethyl Boron has been completed.

    Sub-scale models of thrust chamber have been realized and ignition trials have been carried out successfully.

    Single element thrust chamber hot test in stage combustion cycle mode was also conducted successfully.

    Establishment of test facilities like Cold Flow Test Facility and Integrated Engine Test Facility are under various stages of realization.

    Fabrication drawings are realised for all sub-systems and fabrication of booster turbo-pump and pre-burner subsystem commenced."


    In an interview published on The Asian Age on January 13, 2014, ISRO Chairman, when asked about the semi-cryogenic engine, replied:

    "We are working on the semi-cryogenic engine for the next generation launch vehicles which can transport satellites weighing six tonnes or more into space.

    Approximately Rs 2,500 crore will be spent on this project where we replace liquid hydrogen with kerosene. It is easier to handle kerosene compared to liquid hydrogen. It will take five years to design the engine which will be 10 times more powerful than the cryogenic engine."

    According to the Department of Space Outcome Budeget for 2013-14 (http://www.isro.org/pdf/Outcome budget2013-14.pdf), ISRO plans to complete the development of Semi cryogenic engine and establish the supporting test facilities with the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017).

    "The Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for Semi-cryogenic engine development has been completed. Preparation of fabrication drawings of subsystems has been completed.

    A MOU has been signed with NFTDC for the realization of copper alloy for Thrust chamber. Single element Pre-Burner (PB) injector realized and injector spray characterization using PIV was carried out.

    Test facility for single element pre-burner commissioned at PRG facility, VSSC. Semi Cryo Test facility design by M/s Rolta has been completed. Design of Semi Cryo Engine including heat exchanger and ejector is competed. Fabrication drawings and documents are generated based on the PDR and joint reviews.

    Configuration design of subscale engine is completed. Preliminary Design Review (PDR) of Hydraulic Actuation System (HAS) and Hydraulic Power System (HPS) for Engine Gimbal control is completed and Technical specifications are finalized.

    Single Element Pre-Burner injector element has been hot tested successfully. Ignition of LOX/ Isrosene propellant with hypergolic slug igniter and flame holding, demonstration of safe handling of pyrophoric fluid TEA, validation of start sequence and characterization of injector elements and qualification of Hayness-214 material are the major achievements of the tests.


    Design of single element thrust chamber is completed and fabrication drawings are generated. Single element thrust chamber injector elements are realized and cold flow tests were carried out. Special pre burner which will provide hot gases for testing the single element thrust chamber has been realized."

    In its 2012 annual report, ISRO reported that it had completed the design of single element thrust chamber injector elements and tested cold flow.

    "A rubber composition resistant to Kerosene had been developed and tested.

    Other components developed include rectangular rings, gaskets and O-rings for control components and turbo pump of semi cryogenic engine as well as Tri-ethyl aluminum (TEA) based hypergolic igniter.

    ISRO has done hot test with LOX step injection mode on semi cryogenic pre-burner injector at high pressure after completing cold flow trials and sequence validation tests.

    Further tests with step injection for Kerosene and LOX are planned."


    In its 2011 annual report, ISRO reported:

    "Engine design, generation of fabrication drawing of sub systems and integration drawings has been completed. Preliminary Design Review of Engine Gimbal Control system have been completed and technical specification document of both Hydraulic Actuation System and Hydraulic Power System generated. Hypergolic igniter trials have been successfully demonstrated. Single element of pre burner and thrust chamber are realized. 3 tests have been completed for single element Semi-cryogenic pre-burner injector."
