The whole process of Exocet SM39 use from Scorpene (all pics except the first are from MBDA website) -

SM39 is enclosed in a VSM (Vehicule Sous Marin), a module designed to be handled like a torpedo:

VSM is installed into the sub's torpedo tubes:

VSM seated inside the Scorpene's torpedo racks:

VSM is ejected from the torpedo tube, booster motor allows it to gain some altitude & the 'lid' is blown off:

SM39 is launched from the VSM, it's folded fins deploy and the missile's own propulsion takes it to it's target:

    I have a query.

Before launching through the torpedo tubes, the tubes need to be flooded. This needs the outer torpedo doors to be opened. Does this not create sound which can give away the position of the submarine?

I had the same doubt. The tubes are flooded first with some sort of valve mechanism and only when the pressure is equalized the outer doors are opened. Or else the torpedo is pushed out because of the cavity pressure. Im not 100% sure, my knowledge is through submarine warfare novels.

Yes, operation of the torpedo tube doors does create noise...but it's not a repetitive noise so difficult to track unless you're already aware of the enemy's presence/specifically looking for said type of noise.

A bigger problem is the noise of air pressure ejecting the torpedo (in case of pressure-ejected torpedos; swim-out torpedos solve this problem to a considerable extent). Also...the sound of pumps that operate to remove water from the tubes (before reloading) is a problem, especially because this noise lasts for a while and creates a distinct pattern of noise.

Mazagon Dock Ltd. has handed over the first Scorpene-class SSK, INS Kalvari, to the Indian Navy. The boat will be commissioned into service soon.

@Sancho @Abingdonboy wonder wy we don't just build 6 more of these with incremental tech advances in each. Why a brand new tender for the next 6?

A new procurement can add new capabilities or include price changes, especially if DCNS has to offer us the Scorpene in competition to other offers. In this case the new SPM will have an importance too, because the government hopes tof get more privat players into Indian defence with it.
But anything other than more of these subs, doesn't make much sense for me either.

Navy's 3rd Kalvari-class attack submarine, INS Karanj, set for launch by year-end

Representative image: Launch of lead boat of class, INS Kalvari

INS Karanj, which is third Kalvari-Class Submarine has completed all fabrication work and currently, the submarine is been prepared for launch by end of this year. This was also the first confirmation that third submarine has been named ” Karanj” continuing with the tradition of naming newer submarines on retired submarines.

This was earlier thought to be named INS Vela...maybe that name has been reserved for the 4th boat. Also, the Karanj is the namesake of the original S21 vessel of Foxtrot-class which participated in 1971 war. This submarine was featured in the 2017 film Ghazi.

It's always the case, whatever is the use to open the tube : exocet SM lauch, torpedo lauch, divers escape...
But I think it has been worked in a way to reduce this famous noise.

If India doesn't want to loose the skill of Mazagon dock, it's urgent to order more subs !
