Two days after issuing a 'fatwa' against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a Kolkata cleric on Monday threatened to slit the throat of Pakistan-born author and political commentator Tarek Fatah, with whom he appeared on a television program.

"Your throat will also be slit," Syed Mohammad Nurur Rahman Barkati, the Shahi Imam of Kolkata's Tipu Sultan Mosque, told Fatah while responding angrily to the latter's statement that India has come a long way from the medieval practices when people's throats were slit.

Both Barkati and Fatah were part of a discussion program on a private news channel where the cleric viciously attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of spreading communalism and ruining the life of common people through the demonetization move.

AdvertisemenHe verbally attacked Fatah, who opposed the cleric's decision of issuing 'fatwa' against the prime minister and offered a cash prize.

After the show, Fatah demanded the Muslim cleric's arrest by the Kolkata Police for threatening him.

"Kolkata Mullah threatens me on live TV. Will Kolkata Police arrest him?" he said in Twitter.

Barkati on Saturday issued a 'fatwa' against the prime minister, accusing him of 'bluffing' people through demonetization, evoking a sharp reaction from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which demanded his arrest. He also announced a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh to whoever executes the 'fatwa'.

The West Bengal unit of the BJP lodged a police complaint against the cleric on Sunday, demanding his immediate arrest

Hyderabad madrassa empowers girls with course on fatwa
    Mohammed Wajihuddin| TNN | Updated: Jan 9, 2017, 08.32 AM IST

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • It is Hyderabad's first and only institute that trains women to become muftias.
    • Instruction is imparted in the Darul Ifta, or fatwa department.

HYDERABAD: Over a dozen students, all clad in burqas, are in a small classroom.Their teacher, dressed identically, keeps a close watch.Everyone is on the floor while books on Hadith (traditions of the Prophet), commentaries on the Quran and tomes on fatwas line the walls.

This is the Madrassa Jamiatul Mominath in Moghalpura, which is the city's first and only institute that trains women to become muftias.Instruction is imparted in the Darul Ifta, or fatwa department.

Fatwa is an opinion that Muslims seek on a range of subjects, including marriage, menstruation, divorce, adoption, property issues, and rituals like namaz and roza.Countless madrassas in the country--such as UP's Darul Uloom Deoband--run training courses, but most of them are for men.

"There are several questions that women hesitate to ask muftis. We thought women would be more comfortable discussing their issues with muftias. That's why we introduced this one-year course 12 years ago," said Hafiz Mastan Ali, Jamiatul Mominath's founder.

Set up in 1991, the madrassa has 2,500 students today , of whom 400 are hostellers. The muftia course began with only five girls, but this year, the department is training 15.So far, the madrassa has produced 318 muftis.
The fatwa department's head, Nazima Aziz, said making girls muftias is empowerment. "Once an alima (female graduate) completes fazila (post-graduation), she is eligible for the fatwa course."

Aziz explained that the course is divided into five segments: prayers, women's personal issues, limitations (what women can and can't do), property issues and current issues. " A fatwa is given in the light of Quran commandments and the Prophet's traditions. Muftis try their best to be neutral while giving judgments on disputes. If someone is not satisfied with the decision, he or she can consult another mufti or muftia," she said.

hahahaha girl students made to sit in burqas and taught about women empowerment, what a jokepranav

The girls share Aziz's opinion on the importance of their role. A muftia in the making, Suraiya Shakeel Khan wants to help women. "I can guide people on religion." Khadeeja Fatima feels she would get more respect in the community once she becomes a muftia. Most of them, like Aziz, are in favour of setting up more Darul Iftas for women across the country .

Interestingly, Aziz and her students backed the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB)'s stand on triple talaq. "Talaq in one sitting should be discouraged, but it cannot be banned as that will be tantamount to interference in sharia laws," said Mohammed Hasnuddin, head of Mominath's fatwa department for men. "We don't agree that talaq is a sword dangling over the heads of women. It's an option to end an oppressive marriage and should be used as last resort."

At some point the center Govt has to decide enough is enough and intervene. It is ridiculous that one CM can turn her state into what is practically an Islamic Republic, with all sorts of Sharia style Muslim thugs and mullahs (same thing) roaming free with absolute impunity and actually even receiving encouragement in the form of state Gvt handouts.

Bas, ab bahut ho gaya. Toss that son of a B***h Barkati in jail and set things straight in Bengal.

Despite Islam having intellectuals who think objectively, who critique and question with open mind the Islamic customs and try to go to the root and the motivation behind such customs, which sometimes are made in the guise of excess and indulgence in the basest of the ways and desires - aggression, the threat arising from insecurity of others who are not like them, intolerance, sexual abuse in the name of god, murdering of humans - again in the name of god, intolerance of a different point of view, feeling threatened from those who can think big and objectively - beyond just the "vikaars - kaam, krodh, lobh, moha, ahankaar, ghrina, dwesh", but seeing the big picture of this existence - as above so below, why is it that the world over, Islam is represented and controlled by such "intolerant, hateful, angry, murderous, thankless mullahs"?
