The Indian company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced on 18 September that it had been awarded a contract by the Omani Ministry of Defence to build the new airbase, but provided no further details.

"We have been gradually establishing our credentials in the Middle East and, especially in Oman, as a construction organisation of calibre with the successful execution of many prestigious projects including the Salalah International Airport," the L&T press release said.

The Oman Airports Management Company has previously stated that it was building a new airport at Adam that would be capable of handling 250,000 passengers per year.

Satellite imagery shows that work on a 4,120 m runway began at a location 20 km northwest of the town of Adam in late 2006 or early 2007 and has now been completed. However, the buildings and other infrastructure needed for an airbase or airport have not been constructed as yet.

It has previously been reported that a new airbase would be built at Adam for the 12 Eurofighter Typhoon multirole fighter aircraft Oman has on order. The Royal Air Force of Oman is expected to receive its first Typhoon in 2017.
