have a look at how the ejection seat recline angle has created artificial shortage of space for avionics and fuel in LCA.

Look at the arrows. when you reduce the seat recline, the instrument cluster will move towards back, creating space in nose for OSF and retractable refuelling probe like that of Mig-29K. The seat headrest will move forward making way for the avionics carried in the dorsal to be fitted behind the seat vertically and that will create additional space for fuel in the fuselage. A good and nice design has been ruined because of some absolutely stupid reasons.

Better than getting the same aircraft in 2030 right?

There was a problem sometime back which grounded all Tejas halting test flights for some months.

Problem was ejection seat , pilot helmet was close to canopy , which might injure pilot during ejection..

Probably that s the reason for recline ?

First of all, that's only a graphic that doesn't need to be 100% accurate.

The space behind the seat looks pretty packed already.

Secondly, there must be reasons why the seat is angled like that right and aren't most ejection seats designed like that? Which means it's more an issue of the seat, than the design of the fighter.

Also you have to factor in, what kind of avionics you want to replace. The parts in the nose, should be of the navigation and IFF system (but correct me if I'm wrong) with the antennas above it, right in front of the cockpit window. So is it possible to move these systems, without moving the antennas as well? And a quick comprison between that area of LCA and Gripen, shows us the difference in available space or internal volume:

    Gripen

One can clearly see the much larger space in front of the cockpit window, which allows space for the new IRST, while LCA has just enough space for the antennas. That of course also impacts the internal volume of that section.

Well the issue with the Tejas is the long development phase. Stuff gets added on as and when the technology is available and unfortunately that was not factored in during the preliminary design. I wonder how many weapon/avionics upgrades the Tejas airframe can handle over the course of its life.

I guess a set of flight tests will come first.

Integration and intial flight trails have commenced, the trails are a formality and depend on the availability of the test platform and some other factors.

Efforts for further indigenisation of LCA underway

G Satheesh Reddy, scientific advisor, Ministry of Defence has said that “Indigenisation is a strategic requirement. Strong defence research & development and manufacturing will help the country meet its upgrade requirements. India cannot depend on other nations for long for supply of defence equipment, tools and products. Indigenisation can provide 30 per cent savings for the nation.”

The Centre has made a beginning by identifying 68 parts of light combat aircraft (LCA) that can be indigenised and of which seven parts had been indigenised already.

“With Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) we have identified 68 parts for Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) which could be outsourced and done successfully,” he said and stressed on “dedicated, mission mode approach towards indigenisation”.
