At least one person has been killed and seven 'critically' injured as police have opened fire on locals who torched nine Hindu homes in Rangpur's Sadar Upazila in protest against an allegedly blasphemous Facebook post.

Around 30 people, including law enforcers, were injured in the clash at Thakurparha village in Khaleya union on Friday afternoon, police and doctors said.

Rangpur Medical College Hospital Assistant Director Shafiqul Islam said 11 people hit by rubber bullets and shotgun shells were brought to the government-run facility.

Seven of them were in a critical condition after being hit by bullets in the head and stomach, Shafiqul said.

One of them, Habibur Rahman, 30, from Shaleyashah, died in the evening, he added.

The others in 'critical' condition are 'Mahbubul', 25, 'Jamil', 26, 'Alim', 32, 'Jahangir', 28, 'Amin', 26, and 'Ripon', 28.

Rafiqul Islam Master, a member of the village's Paglapeer Jam-e-Masjid managing committee, told bdnews24.com that a young man uploaded a 'blasphemous' photo some days ago.

The locals took out a procession against the post on Tuesday, demanding the youth's arrest, said Rafiqul, one of the key organisers of the protests.

The protesters spoke to the superintendent of police and gave the law enforcers 24 hours to arrest the youth.

As their demand was not met, they took out another procession on Friday afternoon and attacked the Hindu homes, Rafiqul said.

Gangacharha Police Station OC Zinnat Hossain said the attackers torched the houses of the nine families in a 'planned manner'.

He said personnel from Kotwali Police Station and Taraganj Police Station joined his forces to keep the situation under control after hearing that thousands started demonstrating on Friday afternoon.

He also said a local grocer on Oct 29 started a case against the Hindu man who allegedly posted a blasphemous photo on Facebook.

Police went to the Hindu man's house but could not find him, the officer said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Saifur Rahman said seven policemen injured in the clash were admitted to the local Police Hospital.

The victims of the arson attacks said hundreds of attackers burnt their houses down.

"We couldn't save anything," said Jiten Bala, an elderly woman.

"Jamaat tried to fuel unrest as elections are nearing," Rangpur Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman told reporters after inspecting the scene on Saturday.

He said police identified four people who instigated the attacks following alleged blasphemy and already arrested one of them.

He identified the arrestee as Khaleya union Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary and Shaleyashah Jam-e-Masjid Imam Sirajul Islam.

The SP said Sirajul along with Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal central committee Organising Secretary and Rangpur district unit President Enamul Haque Mazedi, Sadar Upazila BNP member Masud Rana, and Khaleya union Jamaat member Mostain Billah delivered provocative remarks at a human-chain programme before the attacks.

Kotwali Police Station OC Babul Miah claims local BNP leaders were also among the attackers.

Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal is a pro-BNP organisation. The Jammat is a key ally of the BNP.

Police raided the homes of the three others on Friday night, but they had already fled, the OC said.

"Jamaat-Shibir carried out the attacks led by them. They are the instigators of the arson attacks, lootings of Hindu homes," SP Mizanur said.

All the 53 detained over the attack and those injured in the clash with police belong to Jamaat, he said.

"They carried out the attack to create instability ahead of the 11th parliamentary election," the SP said.

The programme was organised on Friday in protest against an allegedly blasphemous photo posted by Titu Roy, a Hindu man, on Facebook.

After the programme, thousands attacked the Hindu homes at Thakurparha village in Khaleya.

At least nine Hindu families lost their houses in arson attacks while one of the protesters was killed in police firing.

No mercy would be shown to those who would try to disrupt communal harmony, said Awami League Organising Secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury after visiting the scene.

    Titu Roy 'illiterate'

One of the houses torched in the attack belongs to Titu Roy, the man who allegedly uploaded the Facebook post.

SP Mizanur said police found no blasphemous post by him on Facebook.

Titu's mother Jiten Bala said he never studied in a school and left the area a decade ago for work.

Titu is accused in a case over the alleged post.

Police have sued over 2,000 people in two cases over the attack.

Sirajul, Mazedi, Masud and Mostain are named as prime suspects in the case.

Jamaat torched Hindu homes in Rangpur: Police

    Saturday, 11 November 2017

Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh led the arson attacks on Hindu homes in Rangpur on Friday, say police.

Jamaat committed the act to create chaos as elections are nearing, said Rangpur Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman after inspecting the scene on Saturday.

“The individual killed in the clash with police and most of those detained over the violence are local Jamaat activists,” he said.

A mob attacked and set fire to Hindu homes in Rangpur on Friday, alleging a local Hindu man had made a Facebook post ‘insulting religion’.

One person was killed after police clashed with the attackers.

A bdnews24.com reports says that kotowali Police Station OC Babul Miah claims local BNP leaders were also among the attackers.

Police deployed in the troubled area identified the attackers, Rahman said.

“Sadar Upazila Ulema Dal Convener Enamul Haque Majid, local BNP leader Masud Rana and Sholowasha Jamme Mosque Imam Shirajul Islam were seen leading the attacks.”

Police raided their homes on Friday night, but they had already fled, the OC said.

No mercy would be shown to those who would try to disrupt communal harmony, said Awami League Organising Secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury.

On Oct 29, Lalchadar Village Grocer Alamgir Hossain filed a case against a local Hindu man claiming he had insulted religion in a Facebook post.

Last Tuesday a few hundred people joined a protest demanding the arrest of the accused. Another protest was held three days later.

Protesters gave the superintendent of police 24 hours to arrest the accused. They led another protest march on Friday after no arrests were made.

At least 8,000 people, mostly armed, were involved in the protests on Friday when they clashed with police. The homes of several Hindu families were set on fire during the clashes.

One person, 30-year-old Habibur Rahman, was killed in the clash. Seven police personnel were injured by sticks and brickbats.

Two cases have been filed over the incident. Police have arrested 53 in connection with the cases.
