MS Dhoni has retired from Test cricket with immediate effect following the drawn Test against Australia at the MCG. Virat Kohli will take over as India captain for the final Test of the series, which India has already lost, in Sydney.
Dhoni was batting on 24 when the Test was called off early - four overs were left and India had four wickets in hand - and he made no mention of his retirement during the customary captain's press conference at the end of the match. The announcement was made via a BCCI press release shortly after and it cited "the strain of playing all formats" as the reason.
"One of India's greatest Test captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the test rankings, MS Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of cricket," the board said. "BCCI, while respecting the decision of MS Dhoni to retire from Test cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India. Virat Kohli will be the captain of the Indian team for the fourth and final Test against Australia to be played in Sydney."

Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the first Indian batsman to complete 10,000 runs or more as captain in international cricket, joining Ricky Ponting (15440), Graeme Smith (14878), Stephen Fleming (11561) and Allan Border (11062).

    • India drew the third Test in Melbourne on Tuesday. Out of the 90 Tests he played, Dhoni led India in 60 matches. Dhoni finished with most Test wins as India captain (27), beating the previous best of 21 wins held by Sourav Ganguly. (Dhoni, Ashwin ensure MCG draw)

A BCCI statement said: “One of India's greatest Test captains under whose leadership India became the No.1 team in the Test rankings Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of cricket. Dhoni has chosen to retire from Tests with immediate effect in order to concentrate on ODIs and T20 formats. (Dhoni knew Kohli was ready for Test captaincy: Sunil Gavaskar)

"BCCI, while respecting the decision of Dhoni to retire from Test cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Tests and the laurels that he has brought to India."

Virat Kohli will captain India in the fourth and final Test against Australia in Sydney from January 6. India have already lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy having lost the first two Tests in Adelaide and Brisbane. Kohli had led in the first Test when Dhoni preferred to rest his injured right hand.

Dhoni bowed out of Test cricket in style. In his final series in Australia, Dhoni became the first Indian wicketkeeper to effect nine dismissals in a Test match in Melbourne.

Overall, he became the third wicketkeeper to achieve the feat versus Australia, the first two being David Murray (West Indies) at Melbourne in December 1981 and Ridley Jacobs (West Indies) at Melbourne in December 2000.

With the bat, Dhoni also became the first Indian batsman to complete 10,000 runs or more as captain in international cricket, joining Ricky Ponting (15440), Graeme Smith (14878), Stephen Fleming (11561) and Allan Border (11062).

He and Raina are named in that report as match fixers. I hope this cheat is banned from all forms of cricket.

There is even Ashwin involved (not fixing it, but what we can call spot fixing) by the way Dhoni's batting in test match is pathetic, he has no class or style for test match. And he did sadao a lot of wicket keepers, Parthiv Patel had good chance till he messed with bowling of Anil Kumble.
Did you notice that onee of the India potential wicket keeper was always in Chennai Super Kings but they did not get to play
Wriddhaman Saha, Parthiv Patel and DK

I call it natural Justice. He finished the future of Sehwag, Gauti, Yuvi and Harbi now he has to bow out for match fixing charges. But he can take solace from Azharuddin and can expect to become an MP in parliament on Khangrass ticket who find virtues in such cheats.

Sehwag was unpredictable, Anil Kumble did give him a golden chance and he took it, but rather than be modest when speaking and trying what others suggested, he went with his own style. If your style gives consistency then you can be arrogant, but if it fails you. then you are called stupid SOB. Yuvi was same. Bhajji actually was strong contender, but then IPL undid Bhajji where CSK were pushing Ashwin as premier bowler. There were other bowlers who did wll, but they were marginalised. They did Sadofy Gambhir to push Murali Vijay

As I understand the scam is so big that it would involve almost half the Indian team. And if this scam comes out in open, it will affect the game and its viewership, and imagine all the records that would be scrutinized

Hmmm right but it has to happen right only Sreesanth , Azharuddin etc cannot be singled out and banned if half team is involved then action has to be taken against so that people who play in future have a right example

but easily said then done it might have adverse effect as you said

Due to the craze of Cricket in India and we being the top revenue makers so we have hold on ICC. ICC would not go against ICC,
ICC without BCCI is like an Amateur group playing sports, no funds.
BCCI gets a lot of endorsements way the cricket is marketed.
You seen 20-20 in Australia they had one sponsor Mcdonalds, and we have IPL where McDonald did not offer much that they can be major sponsor of even a team

I agree that corruption of anything should not be tolerated. But yes we as sports fan have to be prepared for the worst.
I already stopped watching IPL 3 seasons ago when fixing almost looked clear, the turning point of the match did not seem normal, but seemed like an act. To me IPL is somewhat like WWE but in different sport and managed differently.
