‘We are not Chinese’: Arunachal students protest China’s move to rename parts of the state

Braving early monsoon rains, hundreds of students in Arunachal Pradash organised rallies in the capital city of Itanagar as well as Tawang, Pasighat and other parts of the state on Monday to protest against China’s move to “standardise” the names of six places in the Northeastern state, effectively trying to rename them.

China claims a part of Arunachal as its own and calls it South Tibet, though India has repeatedly asserted its sovereignty over the entire state.

The protestors, led by the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union, rejected China’s claims over the state. Khoon bhi denge jaan bhi denge, desh ki mitti kabhi nehi denge,” students chanted, proclaiming that they were ready to bleed but would not give up their country’s soil. Protesters also burnt an effigy of Chinese President Xi Jinping in Itanagar.

Hawa Bagang, President of All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union, said China was interfering with the internal affairs of India. “We are not Chinese,” he said. “Arunachalees are patriotic Indians. We speak Hindi here, not Chinese.”

Tobom Dai, General Secretary of the Students Union, said the indigenous people have only known Indian governance after the British left the country. ‘“Hence China claiming Arunachal doesn’t have any basis and renaming certain places in the state doesn’t make any sense,” he said.

Protestors said that the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Central and state governments should respond fittingly to the repeated Chinese interference in India’s affairs and its claims over Arunachal Pradesh.

China’s latest assertion is seen as a retaliation to the Dalai Lama’s nine-day visit to Arunachal Pradesh earlier this month. China had warned India of “serious measures” after it allowed the Tibetan leader to visit areas that China considers disputed territory and said it would hurt bilateral ties between the two Asian powers. China views the Dalai Lama as a separatist leader for championing the cause of a Free Tibet.

This is the latest power-play between India and China over the border dispute. Another long-running issue is the Chinese government’s decision to issue “stapled visas” to Arunachal residents visiting China, which Indian immigration authorities do not recognise. China claims that it does not need to issue regular visas to people of the state as they look at it as a part of their country.

The figures are about 20-30 on both sides.

Both sides have exaggerated the casualties of each other.

No more than 100 on either side.

My above figures were from Wikipedia; Wikipedia acknowledges that there is disagreement between the Chinese and Indian figures. You should work on your reading comprehension.

When you say "you", do you mean me or China? I ask because I am not Chinese, but a White man from America that lives in China. Perhaps it would be best if you were to get back to your, uh, "pipes of peace". Though actually, from your rambling, it seems you've already over-indulged yourself for the evening.

Just know that, in my mind, you are the perfect caricature of India and its people; so proud and arrogant, but with no substance. I would call you a "paper tiger", but I think a flee would be a more appropriate analogy.

Long live China and its citizens. They are truly a people that can accomplish anything. Their history of the last thirty years shows amazing results and not merely bluster, as India's.

But keep smoking, my friend... keep smoking. :drag:

Chinese know better after Vietnamese kicked their bums in 1979 border war. Chinese couldn't even reach Hanoi after talking so big....and Vietnamese never withdrew from Cambodia (China ally) till much much later (about a decade) on their own terms.

Of course China couldn't handle North Korea either...hence keeping them as a frenemy saves face. When you realise the Han puts saving face over everything else, you can deal with him on your terms quite well....Nehru was too lutyens/westminister to understand that.....thankfully current crop of Indian leadership is very different even since I.G.

    Chinese casualties
The number of casualties during the war is disputed. Vietnamese sources claimed the PLA had suffered 62,500 total casualties, including 550 military vehicles, and 115 artillery pieces destroyed;[68] while Chinese democracy activist Wei Jingsheng told western media in 1980 that the Chinese troops had suffered 9,000 dead and about 10,000 wounded during the war.[69] Leaks from Chinese military sources indicate that China suffered 6,954 dead.[8][11][70]

    Vietnamese casualties
Like their Chinese counterparts, the Vietnamese government has never officially announced any information on its actual military casualties. China estimated that Vietnam lost 57,000 soldiers and 70,000 militia members during the war.[69][71][72] The official Nhân Dân newspaper claimed that Vietnam suffered more than 10,000 civilian deaths during the Chinese invasion[73][74] and earlier on 17 May 1979, reported statistics on heavy losses of industry and agriculture properties.[73]

    Prisoners
Chinese POWs guarded by the Vietnamese
The Chinese held 1,636 Vietnamese prisoners and the Vietnamese held 238 Chinese prisoners; they were exchanged in May–June 1979.[15][16]

The 238 Chinese soldiers surrendered after getting separated from their main unit during the withdrawal from Vietnam and became surrounded by Vietnamese. After surrendering, they were transferred by the Vietnamese soldiers to a prison. The Chinese prisoners reported that they were subjected to torturous and inhumane treatment, such as being blindfolded and having their bodies bound and restrained with metal wire.[75]

I think the number of prisoners held reflects the truth of whose claims are more accurate. China went in, took control, and then left. Vietnam was shown that the USSR could not protect them.

Next time, read about it before rambling:

No one gives a damn about what either side claims as casualties of their own and the other (no way to verify either one)

End of the day Vietnam stayed occupying Cambodia, Khmer rouge (Chinese ally) never returned to Cambodia and therefore China's objective failure is plain to see.

So you being unable to defeat a much smaller country than Pakistan to the extent like we did in 1971 speaks volumes.

Only can invade and occupy places like Tibet and Turkestan....but any well armed opposition and China fails badly...no wonder Japan did what they did to you in WW2.
