Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe, sworn in for another term last week, threatened to punish foreign-owned companies in retaliation for US and European Union sanctions against his regime in a speech on Sunday.

Speaking at the funeral of a retired military leader in Harare, the 89-year-old president said he wanted no "ideas from London or Washingtonâ€￾ about democracy.

The EU eased sanctions on Zimbabwe to encourage political reform earlier this year, but kept an asset freeze and travel ban on Mugabe, several colleagues and the state-run diamond mining company, the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corp.

The US maintains a more extensive travel ban and asset freeze on individuals and entities connected to Mugabe.

"We have British and American companies here and we are treating them well,â€￾ Mugabe said. “There will come a time when we will lose our patience."

"They have companies here, and we have not imposed controls or sanctions against them but time will come when we will say tit-for-tat,â€￾ he continued. “You hit me, I hit you. You impose this on me, I impose this on you.â€￾

Mugabe has said he plans to force more foreign companies to sell majority stakes to local investors, including in the retail sector.

Senile old fart probably forgot that he's already nationalized (read "stolen") everything already. After so many years of utter capriciousness, I rather doubt there's enough direct US or UK investment left in Zimbabwe for anyone to give a rat's-ass.

Mugabe is not an idiot but much more selfish.
A decade ago when he took the land away from the white farmers and distributed it amongs the black people of zimbabwe, he actually gave most of the land to his cronies, his cronies have replaced the white farmers and making money while rest of zimbabwe suffers.

This is one of problems with democracy,
Democracy without proper education and ability to analyse is simply going to crash.

Don't know if this bravado is more for internal propaganda purposes or if he just has an over-sized ego, but for foreign businesses to loose what relatively small share of Zimbabwe's market they have remaining isn't going to make US and EU govts. retract their sanctions regime against the nation. It will be a laughably small loss for them that will hurt Zimbabwe's citizenry more than anyone else.

Definitely agree. Education is essential to functional democracy. There is no benefit to democracy without an educated people that can think for themselves.
