Very detailed (but not necessarily fully accurate) report on the tender, a must read!

This is the Russian roulette which we are getting to understand now. They ensured while giving us the tech that we remain subservient to them forever. What this writer has not placed on record is the problem of Svetlana system which does not allow Rafale-M operations.

The new Rafale with folding wing will be heavier and will fit with Svetlana system. and Svetlana system is adaptable, if not how to use it for N-LCA?

Not really, since the Russians are not responsible for the shortsighted planing of IN wrt to the air wing of IAC1. Nor are they responsible, for IN not cancelling any hope on NLCA MK2 and start plan for an alternative years ago.

However, the if the infos in the article are correct, thetc F18SH still would be able to be used on both carriers, just by using the canted placement on the lift. That should not require modifications to the fighter or the lifts, therefore can't add time for redesign and certification, nor additional costs.
Which leaves the choice between the Mig and the F18SH.

That's once again confirms my suitability ranking and why the Mig could still be the no 1 choice.

If the 20th limit for landing weight he mentioned is correct, what else would be an issue?

Russians were willing to do it for N-LCA but will not do it for anyother aircraft other than Mig-29K

Russians will withdraw the guarantee. I really hope DCNS does that as it will help me with MSA-N.

Can't we just replace it with western one on IAC? (I don't think IN want western fighters to operate from Vikky)

DCNS has an arrestor system on CDG which is fit to trap from 7-23 tons. IN was very interested in the system. IAC-1 arrestor system can be changed even now as it has yet to be fitted on board. One alternative is that IN keeps all Mig-29Ks on Vikky and Rafale-M for IAC-1 and subsequent carriers with DCNS arrestor gear. This will solve lot many problems.

The cause of the crash of the su-33 with the "Admiral Kuznetsov" was the torn cable of the arresting gear, which was replaced prior to the incident, found "Газета.Ru". This incident was the second case in a month on the carrier associated with the rupture of the cable. Factory — manufacturer of the device to the situation before the official explanation of the reasons refused to comment.

Fallen from the aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" su-33 broke the cable of the arresting gear, which was replaced immediately before the incident, told the "Газете.Ru" a source familiar with the organization of flights on the only Russian aircraft carrier.
"Claims to the aircraft no pilot, no complaints. This cable was just installed on the "Kuznetsov", and it was the first landing on the rope. Most likely, in a crash blame the quality of the cable. It is necessary to specify the year of manufacture of the cable, test the whole batch of these cables, test the installation quality of the cable by the crew of an aircraft carrier" — explained the source.

According to him, it is too early to speak definitely, but there is a need to check the plant for the production of arresting gear — it is quite possible that there had been a factory defect. The interviewee said that the cables on the aircraft carrier should be replaced after a certain number of landings.

The crash of the su-33 was officially confirmed in the defense Ministry. The defense Ministry said the pilot ejected, and his health is not threatened.

As previously explained a source "Газеты.Ru" on the deck of the cruiser "Admiral Kuznetsov" there are four cable arrestor "Svetlana-2". Upon landing they raised 12 see the First tether is located 46 m from the edge of the flight deck, then after 12 m from each other.

The pilot who makes a landing, you should try to catch the special brake hook (hook) of the aircraft over the second rope, and even better — for the third (fourth — reserve). If you try to cling to the first, may occur a dangerous hook touch the deck of the ship, especially given the pitching of the aircraft carrier at sea.

Thus, the task of the pilot of carrier-based aircraft — to land the plane on the segment with a length of 36 m with a deviation from the centerline of the flight deck not more than 3 m.

Planting is carried out at high revs the engines of the aircraft, at a speed of about 240 km/h.

Gas engines are retracted only after the plane caught at least one cable of the arresting gear. Otherwise, for the aircraft excluded the possibility of a missed approach.

According to the interlocutor "Газеты.Ru" in this time su-33 landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier in a strictly defined place with a deviation in the axis of the landing is not more than 1 m, caught the second wire of the arresting gear and ran to the deck even 50-60 m to the limit pulling the rope.

Thus, at the time of termination fighter was rolled out of the zone, which contains the remaining wires of the arresting gear. To catch the plane was no more of that.

If the engine su-33 were on the runway, then the pilot still had a chance to take off, but most of all, drive 50 m, the pilot had already removed the engine speed.

The previous crash of the MiG-29K aircraft carrier also occurred after breakage of the cable arresting gear. Then one of the three who made the fighter landing broke a second boarding rope and confused the third. The result left in the air the plane had to wait until the deck, "Kuznetsov" prepare for landing. During the flight in the waiting area had shut down both engines. According to one version, a problem with the fuel system, on the other — the plane simply ran out of fuel.

The arresting gear "Svetlana-2", set to "Kuznetsov", makes St. Petersburg the company "Proletarsky Zavod" (part of United shipbuilding Corporation). Official representatives of the plant to comment "Газете.Ru" the situation to ascertain the details refused. However the company said that no doubt in the reliability of its products, which pass all the required tests. "To determine the reasons for Commission will be formed", — said the Director for external relations, Mr Rich.

On the site there is a detailed description of the arresting gear. It is based on a hydraulic brake, located under the deck and connected to the brake rope through a pulley system and damping devices with the intake cable.

The device has a special cooling system to dissipate heat generated by braking, and the power supply, used for filling and refilling the hydraulic components of the working fluid.

The stopping distance of the aircraft using arrestor "Svetlana-2", — 90-105 m, the maximum landing speed — 240 km/h (landing speed of the su-33).

In early 2014, the Agency TASS with reference to the General Director of Nevsky design Bureau (FCB) Sergey Vlasov said that "Proletarsky Zavod" has resumed the production of modern arresting gear. According to the interlocutor of the Agency, the company produced 11 of the arresting gear. Three of them were installed on the Indian aircraft carrier "Vikramaditya" (the same project as the "Admiral Kuznetsov"), two at the training complex for training pilots of naval aviation in Indian Goa, three in the same domestic complex in Yeisk, another three expected to be set on the construction of the Indian aircraft carrier "Vikrant".

In 2005, on the "Admiral Kuznetsov" has already been a similar case, when the su-33 landed and caught the arresting gear cable, removed the gas and in that moment, broke the rope, and then rolled over the deck.

Then the pilot also ejected and survived, said the source "Газеты.Ru".

However, according to him, more important that the result of all these incidents managed to save the life of the pilots. In aviation, the Navy and marine corps of the United States for the last two years with only carrier-based fighter-bomber McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet occurred eight incidents. 2 June 2016 on the F/A-18 killed the pilot of the aerobatic team's Blue Angels during the preparations for performances. July 28, 2016 pilot F/A-18 crashed during a training flight near Los Angeles.

Let's not forget the Aviation Facilities Complex which is rigged only for the Mig-29.

Except during wartime when one carrier is unavailable and the other aviation fleet is completely useless.
