    IAF certainly needs it, to counter enemy air defences either for air superiority in the border area, or offensive strikes beyond.

    IN on the other side, is limited to air defence of it's CBG and anti ship missions against some Pak navy vessels so far. Offensive strikes to costal areas is not possible, with the limitations of the Mig and the numbers of fighters on our carrier. That's why getting a more capable fighter now and with future carrier battles against PLAN in mind, is so important. The problem however is, the US won't provide us with EA capabilities and probably won't allow the customisations either. So we might have to add that with an own CATOBAR fighter later.

    Btw, USN is developing new EA jamming pods for the Growler and the F35, to counter latest Russian and Chinese air defences.

    You brought the MTOW and payload issue, not me. I only put it in the right perspective. And what has asymmetry to do with load capability and range, that you were talking about?

    I think you have decided today not to be fully aware....

    I just say that :
    Rafale M can take off at more than 22 tons. 22 tons is only the Charles de Gaulle peace time catapult limit.
    India is not ready to have a carrier on sea all time long. You will be pleased to use it from ground bases (at a slightly more cost than Rafale C).

    What a Rafale C can do, a Rafale M can. The contrary is not true.

    Because there's a paper world and a real world. Mig-29K's payload is 5T and Rafale M's payload is 6T in the real world.

    And in the real world, there's also costs that matter.

    I think, you need to read my post properly. I had given advantage to Rafale-M over Mig-29K. But the problem is-Are they competitors? Not at all as on date.

    The asymetry is only a peace time problem.
    In case of war (or peace !) Rafale can take off with 6 Hammer. If the Hammer are not all delivered or in a too asymetric situation, you can released it above the sea before landing on the carrier.
    The cost is irelevant in peace time or in a low level conflict (as France against ISIS). Not in a high intensity war.

    Did you read the last word "from Stobar". And did you read that Rafale-M has better aerodynamics?
    The calculations you gave werefor CATOBAR carriers. I had very clearly written that for STOBAR, Rafale-M suffers with even lower payload.

    Can Rafale M take off from a ramp with more than 22T?

    Why should we be interested if the Rafale M can take off from Nimitz or CdG with catapults? It has no relevance to the IN. Our carriers have only ramps.

    You are wrong there. We want 3 carriers out of which 2 carriers are always available.

    If the catapult based carrier is delayed, we may end up purchasing another Vikrant class to compensate for the delay.

    IN has no interest in land performance of Rafale M.

    That's okay. IAF has no need for carrier capability, no different from how land performance of Rafale M is not relevant to the IN.

    INS Baz is an air base in A&N Islands.

    nearly 75-90 days every year but that does not mean that in case of war beyond our waters we will not respond? We will respond right to the tip of Africa.

    I think 3 months at sea and 3 months in the dock.

    But during wartime, it is possible to keep 2 carriers operational. Only 1 carrier will undergo refit at a time which I think is once every three years.

    @vstol jockey will know better.

    2 x 90 days => Half a year no carrier at sea.
    So 50% of time the carrier plane are ashore. So not too bad to have nice perf apart from carrier.

    But it's sure a navy don't purchase embarqued planes only for its ashore perf.

    All depend of the ramp and the lenght of deck before...

    (it's a joke. I know a deck is limited to more or less 300m).
