    N. Korea fires artillery on South

North Korea shot dozens of rounds of artillery onto a populated South Korean island near their disputed western border Tuesday, prompting South Korea to return fire and scramble fighter jets, military officials said. At least one South Korean marine reportedly was killed.

The skirmish came amid high tension over North Korea’s claim that it has a new uranium enrichment facility and just over a month after North Korean leader Kim Jong Il unveiled his youngest son Kim Jong Un as his heir apparent.

South Korea’s YTN television said one South Korean marine was killed and that two people were injured. The report said several houses were on fire and shells were still falling on Yeonpyeong island, which is about 100 km west of the coast. The station broadcast pictures of thick columns of black smoke rising from the island.

Yonhap news agency, quoting a military official, said four soldiers were wounded.

President Lee Myung-bak ordered officials to make sure that the firing wouldn’t escalate, according to Yonhap, quoting a presidential official. YTN said between 1,200 and 1,300 people live on the island, citing an island resident.

A South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff official said dozens of rounds of artillery landed on the island and in the sea. The official says South Korea fired back. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of JCS rules, said South Korea’s military is on alert. He had no other details, and could not confirm the reports of casualties.

Tensions between the two Koreas have remained high since the sinking in March of a South Korean warship in which 46 sailors died. Seoul blamed a North Korean torpedo, while Pyongyang has denied any responsibility.

This is terrible if the intention was clearly targeting a town location.

I don't know why the South Koreans put up with this.
Fight back , you idiots, your defense expenditure is more than their GDP.

North Korea wants to escalate this issue, South Korea has more to lose than NK. It is understandable why SK is not going all out.

All the same, I feel a coalition should carry out a full scale invasion of North Korea and get rid of that scoundrel Kim Jong Il and his coterie once and for all. That would be in the best interests of everyone, including North Korea.

Well, it's easy for us to denounce N. Korea and make noises for an invasion, but Seoul is within range of the N. Korea artillery. Kim Jong Il lights up those guns, S. Korea will lose a hell of a lot and then, after the war with the North is won, will have to deal with the problem of integrating the bankrupt, corrupt and uneducated north with the rest of the south. They'll also have to deal with China, which won't be non-too-happy with real estate they have their eyes on fall into the hands of another nation. Oh, and let's not forget that the American army is overextended right now and the S. Koreans will have to do most of the fighting themselves, which isn't also very attractive. And finally, there're the nukes the N. Koreans have on their hands and which the madmen in power there might actually use.

On the contrary, this is standard modus operandi for the North Koreans. Everytime they need aid, they escalate the situation on the border with their southern neighbors and someone pays them a bribe. The south koreans have wised up and not playing this game anymore and as the situation in N. Korea gets worse by the day, the N. Koreans are getting more desperate, which is what we're seeing now.

Well both countries are still technically at war.
But its seems North Korea is testing South Korea's patience more and more each day. NK has nothing to loose while SK has its capital, millions of people, their economy and their state to loose.

SK must retaliate heavily. NK should get the taste of their act.

It's easy to say that but just one thing to consider is that the capital is a stone-throw distance away from the DMZ. Plus, one nuke in a densely populated area will mount to heavy civilian casualties. It is not just that, it has taken a lot of time for SK to reach what it is today. Remember, NK and SK once started off on the same page but look where both are today. It takes years to build something, but seconds to ruin it.

If NK did not have a nuke, South Korea would have run down NK's throat 100 times by now. God forbid if war occurs and its over, considering the NK regime is dismantled, the huge cost of reunification and humanitarian supplies to the under-nourished in NK will be SK's responsibility.

I agree that SK has more to loose in a case of all out war but for how long they can take this?? For how long they have to live in a fear of Nukes? There has to some solution and it should be done at all costs.

I just remember the comment of Major Chandpuri(Longewala war hero)...he once said that we have 3rd largest Army, brave of the bravest soldiers and still enemy do misfortunes and the reason is that we dont retaliate. Once they opened fire and killed 2 of our Jawans...we Replies and Killed 14 of theirs.....and there was no firing for 2 years.(He was posted there for 2 years)

SK should do the same. NK must know that south can retaliate.

Yes, SK has to do something about NK's bullying, but at what cost? Are you ready to almost sacrifice an entire generation just to prevent bullying?
Millions of people's lives are at stake and its not just a matter of hundreds.

The best solution for SK would be to assassinate the mad-men who run NK, Kim Jong Il, his family and his military leaders. Just because of one f**king mad man and his fat son, millions don't have to suffer.

I'd rather bare the bullying for a million years than risk the life of millions.
