Modi has to be stopped for the sake of country: Buddhadeb

KOLKATA: CPM Politburo member Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Wednessday said Narendra Modi becoming Prime Minister will be dangerous for the country and alleged that the Trinamool Congress has a covert pact with the BJP.

"We know that Manmohan Singh will not come back to power because of the policies he is pursuing. But the person coming up is Narendra Modi, who is a monster. It will be dangerous for the country if he ascends to power," said Bhattacharjee.

The former West Bengal chief minister alleged it was the Trinamool Congress, which was having a covert pact with the BJP, but was not willing to come out in the open.

Accusing the Congress-led UPA regime of pursuing neo-liberal policies, Bhattacharjee said, "This UPA government has failed to control the prices of essentials, why will the people vote them to power again".

Modi looks beyond BJP to counter AAP

In the wake of the Aam Aadmi Party's threat to challenge the BJP in urban centres, Narendra Modi is not counting on his party or its youth wing alone to spread his message.

In addition to BJP's efforts through its organisation network, pro-Modi groups like Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG) are fanning out to woo the youth.

The CAG, which was founded by 60 professionals, is focusing on 13 states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where Modi has high stakes in terms of parliamentary seats.

The CAG will not speak so much directly about Modi as much as BJP units will do. But, as a CAG official put it, it will engage the youth in 196 cities, mostly tier 2 and tier 3 cities, to highlight the issues that directly deal with good governance, which the BJP PM will be seen as "the one with answers."

"We are aiming to build the largest grassroots community of informed and motivated citizens committed to make a difference,â€￾ said an official who did not wish to be named.

The CAG shot to prominence last October when it got representatives from 7,000 colleges to interact with Modi under "Manthan".

Significantly, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu shared the stage with Modi on that occasion. Billing its efforts as part of an initiative to strengthen "accountable governance" in India, Manthan encouraged college students to come up with innovative solutions to 14 themes widely recognised as some of the most critical challenges that India faces today.

The themes range from employability of the youth to electoral reforms to empowerment of women.

"Our effort is aimed at linking the debate about governance with Modi by involving youth who may prefer to discuss issues on not-so directly party platform," said another CAG official.

The CAG is also associated with Modi's pet project, the Statue of Unity Movement, for building the world largest statue in Gujarat for Sardar Patel.

In fact, after the "Run for Unity" programme announced by Modi across the country since December 15 and endorsed by the BJP, the CAG has been taking initiatives that match the saffron party's plan for the next three months.

The group will focus on mobilising the rural youth and the first-time voters to boost the BJP’s strategy to bring focus back on Modi's leadership as a counter to the Congress and AAP, and project him as the only alternative for better governance in the country.

Besides "Run for Unity" in 565 locations, the campaign would see a "Write for Unity", a slogan and essay competition on Sardar Patel and his ideals of India's unity and good governance in 200,000 schools in the next two months.

A photo collage initiative to reach out to grass roots-level elected representatives in 250,000 bodies in rural and urban areas is also in the offing.

A day ago, BJP president Rajnath Singh launched an initiative by his party's youth wing to attract students across universities in the country ahead in support of Modi, which will see scouting for "campus ambassadors" who will man "Modi cafes."

Led by Anurag Thakur, the BJP Yuva Morcha aims to pick 5,000 campus ambassadors in 20 states to reach out to 2 million students. These envoys will also be engaged in registering new voters and also seeking views of students on "new politics and empowerment of youth."

India is a nation with great potential but today is sick with corruption at all levels of society. Something new and untried is of course a fearful prospect for those that have become accustomed to the sickness and learned to live with it or prosper from it at the expense of the innocent.

But we should not become complacent. More than anything, right now India requires momentum. Such a thing can only come from men of vision. Such men are unlike most today, because they've unique needs for fulfillment from life; they are less interested in money, traditional measures of success, and building their political credentials; they are absorbed with and satisfied by testing their ideology / ideas above all.

Perhaps that is also why people are apprehensive for giving men genuinely driven by ideas a chance. They are difficult for most to relate to; it is hard for common man to understand what drives a man with a strong ideology at his core. But when visionary men have been given an opportunity, historical precedent indicates that the results have often been remarkable with relation to institutional change; and we discover something valuable about ourselves in the process.

Of course, India cannot depend solely on Modi. The institutional reform is what's most important. Men come and go. A nation that is to be strong indefinitely needs to depend upon strong institutions more than strong men in the long-term. But if there is any man that can create momentum for catalyzing the institutional reform in a nation with an often malfunctioning bureaucracy, it will be an ideologue, not unlike Modi.

Modi mocks PM at NRI meet, says 'good days ahead' after LS polls

NEW DELHI: BJP leader Narendra Modi on Thursday chose a global NRI meet to hit out at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who had said that "we are set for better times".

"I agree with the Prime Minister. Good days are ahead for India. I don't want to say anything more. We should wait for four to six months. But good days are coming," the BJP's prime ministerial candidate said, indicating that his party would form the next government at the Centre after the Lok Sabha polls.

Modi's jibe at Singh came a day after the Prime Minister sought to dispel apprehensions among the Indian diaspora on the state of the economy, saying that the country was heading towards "better times" and there was no reason to despair about its present or worry about the future.

Addressing a press conference last week, the Prime Minister had said that "we are set for better times" as the cycle of global economic growth is turning for the better.

This is the first verbal attack on the Prime Minister by Modi after Singh said that "it will be disastrous for the country to have Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister."

Slamming the UPA government, Modi also said at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas that the overall atmosphere of divisive politics, policy paralysis and scandals and corruption have severely hit people's perception and trust in the government and its leaders.
