Ahmed Patel should keep in mind his grand defeat in 2002 Guj election. They were completed routed in that election.

All eyes on Modi's Meerut rally today

MEERUT/LUCKNOW: Narendra Modi has so far stayed away from contentious issues in his poll pitch as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. Instead he has hooked his campaign to the development plank with Gujarat as the model. He stayed on course during the recent rally in Gorakhapur. But all eyes are now on the Gujarat CM's rally in Meerut on Sunday in the backdrop of the Muzaffarnagar riots. Will Modi give in to politics of polarization?

During a rally in Agra, Modi consciously arrived on stage only after the state BJP leaders had felicitated two party MLAs- Suresh Rana and Sangeet Singh Som- who were accused of stoking the communal clashes. But it would be difficult for Modi to avoid being seen with the two MLAs on Sunday as they represent constituencies which fall in the Meerut region. Hoardings of the two legislators have already appeared on the roads leading to the rally venue- Shatabdi ground.

A senior BJP leader claimed post Muzaffarnagar riots, the JATs have gravitated towards the party, accusing the Akhilesh government of neglect. A large number of people from Muzaffarngar are expected to attend the rally, said state BJP spokesman Dr Chandramohan Singh.

But going by Modi's changed grammar of politics since his elevation as the party's nominee for the top job, political observers don't expect any change in his narrative. They say Modi would not like be seen as propelling politics of polarization, a tag that has been haunting him since the post-Godhra riots.

They say Modi will have no dearth of local issues to talk about at the rally - the sugarcane crisis, industrialization, polluting units, power crisis among other things.

At his last rally at Gorakhpur, the Gujarat CM had taunted Mulayam Singh Yadav, saying the SP chief needed a 56-inch chest to bring UP at par with Gujarat. But he refrained from reacting to Mulayam's 'mass murderder' comment about him.

BJP's minority cell president Rumana Siddiqui said a sizeable number Muslims from the riot-affected areas of Muzaffarnagar and Shamli had assured of their participation at the rally.

But the political opposition, including SP, BSP and Congress, views Modi's visit differently.

"Modi has been involved in massacre of hundreds of Muslims in Gujarat. Muslims in western UP will certainly be disturbed by his appearance. This is going to benefit us in the Lok Sabha elections," said BSP Rajya Sabha MP Munquad Ali. Ali, who happens to be one of the prominent Muslim faces of BSP in western UP, said unlike now, the minorities were safe under the BSP government.

SP national general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Agarwal said Muslims have been and will always be with the party. "The Samajwadi Party dispensation has been doing whatever it could for Muslims," he said. Taking a pot shot at Modi, Agarwal termed him a "businessman from Gujarat" in politics. "A businessman cannot be a political leader and a political leader cannot be a businessman," he said.

"The region, which was rocked by communal violence last year, was neither visited by Mulayam Singh nor cabinet minister Azam Khan. This has further angered the Muslims. If Modi thinks he will be able to lap up the Hindu votes, he is mistaken," said Congress state spokesperson, Dwijendra Tripathi.

"All political parties are trying their best to woo Muslims," said political scientist J P Shukla. He said Modi may take advantage of this confusion among the community in western UP which has a considerable population of Muslims.

BJP launches 'Chai Pe Charcha' for PM nominee Narendra Modi

New Delhi: Further highlighting its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's past as a tea-seller, the Bharatiya Janata Party launched a full-fledged 'chai pe charcha' campaign under which it will sell free tea across the country.

The BJP is going big with the campaign as it plans to hold it at 1,000 different locations in the country in the run up to Lok Sabha elections.

Senior party leader Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday announced about the party's initiative. She said that Narendra Modi himself would be flagging off this campaign. The BJP also released its new advertisement on 'chai pe charcha'.

She added, "This campaign is so big that there will be atleast 10 rounds and if time allows there will be 12-15 rounds as well. The rounds will be conducted in 1000 locations. Narendra Modi will start this campaign on February 15 and we have identified the 1000 locations from 27 states."

The massive campaign would be divided into three parts, namely share, ask, suggest. This programme will be held between 6-8 pm starting February 12. The BJP also plans to use DTH, satellite, internet, mobile phone and social media to boost the programme.

Sushma said, "We can do 12- 15 rounds too, 1000 locations in 1 round. 300 cities will be covered with this."

This comes days after the Karnataka BJP had set up tea stalls in Bangalore where senior party leaders like Venkaiah Naidu were seen distributing tea.

Neighbours like SL and China pressuring India: Modi

Indian Prime ministerial BJP candidate Narendra Modi accused the Congress Government of being weak when it came to handle relations with India’s neighbors and said India was being troubled by Sri Lanka, China, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

“Small nations are pressuring India and no one is listening to us. It is the weak government which is responsible for this state of affairs. We belong to a noble country but unfortunately India is being troubled by Sri Lanka, China,Bangladesh and Pakistan. If India is strong then our neighbours will also be friendly towards us,â€￾ the foreign media reported Mr. Modi as having said at a mega rally in Chennai yesterday.

Referring to the crucial issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen Mr. Modi told the rally that these fishermen were facing a major problem.

He said Indian fishermen were detained in Sri Lankan jails.“If the Government had even a little concern for the poor then the condition of the fishing community in Tamil Nadu would be different,â€￾ Mr. Modi said.

US Ambassador to India to meet Narendra Modi, says US State Department

US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell plans to meet Narendra Modi, signalling a shift in America's stand towards the BJP's prime ministerial candidate in connection with 2002 Gujarat riots.

"We can confirm the appointment (between Modi and Powell)," a State Department spokesperson told PTI. The request to meet Modi has been made by Powell herself, but the spokesperson, did not comment on the possible date of the meeting, which is expected to take place in Ahmedabad this month.

"This is part of our concerted outreach to senior political and business leaders which began in November to highlight the US-India relationship," the spokesperson said.

The go ahead, just before the announcement of general elections in a few weeks from now, seems to have been taken after intensive debate within the various wings of the Obama Administration -- the White House and the State Department in particular -- with crucial inputs from the members of the Congress, and the influential leaders of the corporate sector, the US India Business Council in particular.

In the past few weeks, a series of public meetings organised by the influential think tanks here have had concluded that the BJP-led by Modi was currently headed to win the upcoming general elections.

The Overseas Friends of BJP (OFBJP)-US president Chandrakant Patel welcomed the decision taken by the Obama Administration in this regard.

"We highly appreciate the decision taken by US President Barack Obama, and Secretary of State John Kerry. This would further help in strengthening of Indo-US relationship," Patel said.

"Modi is the most popular leader of the country right now.

Given that he has been given clean shit by all the courts in India, it was not fair on the part of the US to not to have relationship with Modi," Patel said.

In 2005, the US State Department had revoked a visa that Modi had for travelling to the US in the wake of the 2002 riots in Gujarat.
