Indian private firm Larsen & Toubro indicates it is designing and building a swimmer delivery
vehicle (SDV). This poster was up at the L&T stand at DefExpo. Under development by L&T Heavy Engineering, this image depicts it as a dry type delivery vehicle for up to four marine commandos.

Love how it reminds me of this.

Executives I spoke to at the stand said it was being developed and built in-house and would be offered to the Indian Navy once it was complete (like the Adamya AUV).

Separately, it is known that in 2012, the Indian MoD approved a navy requirement of four special operational vessels (SOVs) for the MARCOS, apparently to be built at the Hindustan Shipyard Ltd in Visakhapatnam. It is not clear if L&T is involved with that classified programme.

Navy's 48 warships being built indigenously: Vice chief

Hailing the country's indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, Vice Admiral P. Murugesan, vice chief of the navy, on Tuesday said that 48 warships were currently under construction in Indian shipyards. These 48 ships being manufactured for the Indian Navy include aircraft carriers, frigates, destroyers, submarines, corvettes and fast attack crafts.

The vice admiral was speaking at the simultaneous launch of three Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts (WJFAC) at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) here. "It is a proud reflection of our indigenous capabilities that we are building all kinds of warships. GRSE has so far built 94 ships for the navy," added Murugesan.

The three WJFAC - Tarmugli, Tillanchang, Tihayu - are named after Andaman and Nicobar group of islands, and are among the four such warships being built by GRSE.

GRSE chairman and managing director Rear Admiral A.K. Verma (retd) said two of the three WJFACs will be delivered for commissioning in the last quarter of the year. With a displacement of around 315 tonnes, the ships are designed for a maximum speed of 35 knots with an endurance of nearly 2,000 nautical miles at 12-14 knots.

Powered by the latest 4,000-series MTU engines with advanced machinery control system, the ships will be fitted with CRN-91 indigenous 30mm gun with optronic pedestal and have the latest communication equipment and radars to enable effective surveillance.

The WJFACs are ideally suited for interception of fast-moving surface craft and will perform anti-smuggling, fishery protection and search and rescue operations.

KOLKATA: The Navy would get four new Water Jet Fast Attack Craft by the end of March, 2016 for conducting attack missions, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching and rescue operations, officials said today.

The Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) is building the four warships in its Kolkata yard.

Commodore Ratnakar Ghosh, Director (shipbuilding), GRSE, said that two of the ships would be delivered to the Navy by December and the third one two months later.

"We are trying our best to deliver the fourth one also by March," the official told PTI.

The ships are meant for attack missions as well as patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching and rescue operations carried out by the Navy.

A formal launching ceremony of the three Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (WJFAC) was held today. They have been named- Tarmugli, Tillanchang and Tihayu - after different islands in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.

Two of them are also expected to participate in the international fleet review to be held in Visakhapatnam during February, 2016.

After launching into the sea, fitting out of equipment and ship systems would be completed and the ships would be put to sea for trials before commissioning.

These ships are an improved version of fast attack craft built by GRSE from 2009 to 2011.

Designed for a maximum speed of 35 knots, these ships are 48m long, 7.5m wide and displace around 315 tonnes.

The WJFAC are powered by the latest 4000-series MTU engines with advanced machinery control system.

The craft would have the latest communication equipment and radars to enable effective surveillance.

The ships will be fitted with CRN-91 indigenous 30mm Gun with Optronic Pedestal to give them requisite firepower for effective patrolling.

"Kamorta-class anti-submarine warfare corvette Kadmatt will go for sea trials next month and we hope to deliver it by August. This ship will also participate in the fleet review," GRSE officials said.

Chinese submarine docking at Pakistan no big concern: Indian Navy

Amidst reports that a Chinese submarine had crossed the Arabian Sea and entered Karachi port last month, the Indian Navy today said it was not a matter of big concern but they were monitoring all such activities.

"Docking of a submarine belonging to some other country in a third country itself is not a big concern but we do monitor them, whichever submarines operate in our region," Vice Admiral P Murugesan, Vice Chief of Naval Staff, told reporters here today.

India also has submarine capabilities and our submarines also go on dock in foreign countries, he said while speaking on sidelines of the launching ceremony of Navy's Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts by defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE).

"We monitor them and then we see what are the precautionary measures we should take," the naval officer said.

As far as naval cooperations are concerned, Murugesan said, "We are also having relations with numerous countries but we monitor in our neighbourhood who is interacting with which other navy. That is always briefed to the concerned authorities of the government and we do develop our navy to meet any challenges that might come out of such cooperation".

On naval build-up in India's neighbourhood, he said there is "no immediate concern".

"Our Navy is quite strong enough to look after our maritime interests in our area of interest," he said adding that the navy is like an ambassador as they can go anywhere.
