No political agenda, my fast is against black money: Baba Ramdev
    Jun 1, 2011, 09.55pm IST

NEW DELHI: Congress on Wednesday distanced itself from the government's unprecedented step of sending four senior ministers to the airport to receive Baba Ramdev in a bid to persuade him not to go ahead with the protest from June 4 saying it was "unnecessary" and the party has "nothing to do" with it.

"The party is not at all related to this entire exercise from here to the airport (ministers going to the airport to receive the yoga guru)," top sources in Congress said commenting on the government's move, which indicated the unease in the party over the issue.

The sources also suggested that Congress president Sonia Gandhi was not in the loop over the decision. "The party has nothing to do with it. It is not involved in this airport exercise," they said.

Party general secretary Digvijay Singh said, "We are also interested in the issue of corruption and black money but hunger strike won't check corruption or help in bringing back black money. He (Baba Ramdev) should agree to the request made by the Prime Minister and other ministers."

Ramdev to go ahead with fast

Baba Ramdev on Wednesday said that he was not targeting any political party and his fast is against the menace of black money.

The yoga guru said his fast is against the system that breeds black money. He said that Rs 50 lakh crore has come to India from Mauritius. The government must name tax evaders and punish them, Ramdev added.

"The government must bring back black money stashed away," Baba Ramdev said.

Ramdev was addressing his supporters and mediapersons in New Delhi.

"I am with Anna Hazare in demanding a strong Lokpal Bill," Ramdev said.

Govt tries to placate yoga guru

Earlier in the day, worried over Baba Ramdev's plan to go on fast from June 4, the government took the unprecedented step of sending four senior ministers, including finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, to the airport for talks but he appeared not to relent on his plans.

In a bid to prevent a repeat of a situation that evolved when Anna Hazare-led civil society mounted a campaign against corruption in April, Mukherjee accompanied by HRD minister Kapil Sibal, parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and tourism minister Subodh Kant Sahay held talksat the airport with Ramdev who arrived by chartered jet from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.

Cabinet secretary K M Chandrasekar was also along with the ministers.

Baba Ramdev, who earlier in the morning did a volte face on his Tuesday's statement that the Prime Minister and Chief Justice of India should be kept out of Lokpal's purview, told reporters after the meeting that the first round of talks has been positive and there will be further dialogue with the government.

"On June four there will be a satyagraha (protest fast) in Ramlila Maidan as well as in 624 districts across as crores of people want the country to be rid of black money, corruption and demand a change in system," he said.

To a question on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's appeal to him not to go ahead with his fast plans, he said "I do not believe in fear or creating fear. We have raised issues of national interest. This fight is not against any person and any party. So we are not criticising anybody."

The government virtually rolled the red carpet for the yoga guru whose campaign will demand repatriation of all black money stashed abroad and an ordinance is issued for means to bringing it back.

"The talks will continue with Baba Ramdev over the next couple of days. We discussed a number of issues of national significance. The dialogue was not limited to a couple of issues. Ramdev also raised a broad number of issues," Sibal told reporters after a nearly two and a half hours meeting between government ministers and Baba Ramdev.

Meanwhile, hectic preparations - including the erection of a huge tent to accommodate 20,000 people - were in progress at the Ramlila grounds for Saturday's fast.

Nervous UPA gives Ramdev VIP treatment

New Delhi: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev appears to have the central government literally at his feet. A visit to Ramdev by four ministers, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, telecom Minister Kapil Sibal, Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and Cabinet Secretary KM Chandrashekhar at the airport revealed the nervousness of the government over Ramdev's fast.
To make matters more difficult for the government, the RSS too is now backing Ramdev.
After an over two-hour long meeting with Ramdev, the government came out without getting what it wanted - Ramdev calling off his fast.
"Satyagraha from June 4 will continue as per plans. Talks have been constructive. There has been consensus on some issues and talks will continue in the future," Ramdev said after the meeting.
Sibal said that more talks would be held with the yoga guru.
"Ramdev raised serious issues impacting the country. The government will take these seriously forward," he said.
The government was proactive this time because it didn't want to be caught on a backfoot as during Hazare times.
Hazare's fast had led to a loss of face for the government, but Ramdev is seen as a greater threat because of his proximity to the RSS. The government is worried that if Ramdev's fast takes off, it may attract strong political support from the right wing.
RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav made it clear that the RSS is with Ramdev.
The Prime Minister also stepped in despite the fact that government sources say that many of many demands of the yoga guru are unreasonable and even alarming. Clearly, the government is caught in a bind as it cannot afford to ignore the demands of the civil society, yet cannot be seen as weak kneed.

Cong distances itself from 4 senior ministers receiving Ramdev

    1 Jun 2011, 2201 hrs IST, AGENCIES
Congress today distanced itself from the government's unprecedented step of sending four senior ministers to the airport to receive Baba Ramdev in a bid to persuade him not to go ahead with the protest from June 4 saying it was "unnecessary" and the party has "nothing to do" with it.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee accompanied by Kapil Sibal, Pawan Kumar Bansal and Subodh Kant Sahay held talks for over two hours at the airport with Ramdev, who arrived by a chartered jet from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh this afternoon.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already gone the extra mile to urge Ramdev not to go ahead with his hunger strike, promising him to find a "practical and pragmatic" solution to tackle the issue of corruption.

Singh has written a letter to Ramdev, "welcoming his constructive suggestions to improve governance."

A senior party leader speaking on condition of anonymity said the party cannot afford such "light" steps as it has to look beyond the three years-term of a government.

"It was not required," the leader commented when asked whether the government has gone in an overdrive in persuading the yoga guru in this matter.

The leader argued that four ministers do not go to the airport even when the head of a country visits India. "The party has to think beyond...people should not run after temporary phases," he said.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari had yesterday maintained an enigmatic silence over the Yoga guru's proposed agitation on the blackmoney issue from June 4 and the government's decision to persuade him to postpone his protest.

"We have to nothing to say on Baba Ramdev," was his only refrain. He had refused to answer questions like whether the government went in an overdrive.

I will join Baba Ramdev on June 5: Anna Hazare - India News - IBNLive

New Delhi: After the Baba Ramdev scare, there is a new complication for the government. Now, Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev pose a combined challenge to the UPA government and the Congress party.

Anna hazare on Thursday declared that he will join Baba Ramdev in his protest fast against black money saying he won't allow the government to weaken the anti-corruption agitation.

"I will join Baba Ramdev on June 5. The fight is against corruption. I will talk to Baba on how to go forward on the fight against corruption. The government has tried to cheat us. The government had assured us that they would look into our demand," he said.

"I will support Baba Ramdev so that the government does not do what it did when we were fighting. We will fight together against corruption," he added.

Anna Hazare also said that there is no divide in the civil society ove rthe Lokpal bill.

"There is no two views on Lokpal bill between us and Baba," he said.

Meanwhile, the UPA's outreach to Baba Ramdev continues. Ministers are expected to meet Ramdev on Thursday as well.

The Cabinet too is expected to discuss the Ramdev issue. significantly the Congress Core Committee will also meet today. Baba Ramdev though is firm on going ahead with his fast, starting Saturday.

The meetings come even as the party indicated it was miffed with the government's red carpet rolled out to the Yoga guru at the airport on Wednesday - he was received by four Union Ministers and the cabinet secretary.

The party is also worried about the fact that the RSS has come out in support of Baba's protest.

Congress Core Group to meet, discuss Ramdev’s agitation

Congress top brass, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party chief Sonia Gandhi, are expected to deliberate on Thursday on the situation arising out of Yoga guru Ramdev’s plans to go on a hunger strike on the issue of black money from June four.

A meeting of the Congress Core Group headed by Ms. Gandhi is scheduled this evening in the backdrop of apparent differences between the party and the government over the way the issue needed to be tackled.

The Core Group, which generally meets on Friday is meeting a day ahead, reflecting the concern in the party and the government over Ramdev’s plans.

Top Congress leaders and senior ministers, including Pranab Mukherjee, A. K. Antony, P. Chidambaram and Political Secretary to Congress chief Ahmed Patel are part of the group which decides on major policy issues.

A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs was held a few days back to discuss Ramdev’s fast and Dr. Singh had also written a letter to the Yoga guru asking him not to go ahead with the fast, promising him to find a “practical and pragmatic” solution to tackle the issue of corruption.

Congress has distanced itself from the government’s unprecedented step of sending four senior ministers to receive Ramdev at the New Delhi airport in a bid to persuade him not to go ahead with the protest saying it was “unnecessary” and the party has “nothing to do” with it.

“The party is not at all related to this entire exercise from here to the airport ( ministers going to the airport to receive the Yoga guru),” top sources in Congress has said.
