    Next Prez: Manmohan/ Kalam/ Somnath V/s Pranab

The Presidential race took a dramatic twist today with the Congress declaring Pranab Mukherjee as their preferred choice but two key allies, TMC and SP, came out with a surprise response by suggesting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's name.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi informed TMC leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that her party's first choice for Rashtrapati Bhawan was the Union Finance Minister. When Mamata pressed for a second Congress choice Gandhi mentioned Vice President Hamid Ansari's name.

It was the West Bengal leader, in the capital at the invitation of Gandhi, who disclosed the Congress choices to the media, ending weeks of guessing game.

A bigger surprise came immediately thereafter when Mamata and SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav disclosed the names of Singh, former President A P J Abdul Kalam and former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee as their preferred candidates. Anyone of them would be acceptable to them if there was a consensus.

This dramatic turn of events left the Presidential race wide open and put the Congress in a dilemma. The party needs the support of both TMC and SP to ensure that its candidate wins.

Other allies such as DMK, NCP, RLD and NC, have already indicated their support for Pranab Mukherjee.

By proposing the Prime Minister's name, Mamata and Mulayam may have caused embarrassment to the Congress and by implication to him also as some political observers interpret this move as a loss of confidence in him.

    Cong's #1 Choice: Pranab

Earlier, ending days of suspense, Congress President Sonia Gandhi today made it clear that Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee was her first choice for Presidentship and Vice President Hamid Ansari was also in the reckoning.

Gandhi revealed her mind to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee who gave no commitment of her party's support, saying that she would convey her position after discussions with Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and her own party.

"We had detailed discussions.... Soniaji told me that she had held meetings with two-four allies and her first choice (for Presidentship) is Pranab Mukherjee and second choice is Hamid Ansari," Banerjee told reporters after her 30-minute meeting with Gandhi.

The West Bengal Chief Minister said she told Gandhi that "at the moment, I cannot say anything. We need to discuss with Mulayam Singh and my own party. Then only we can say something."

Banerjee, whose party is a crucial constituent of the UPA, later met Yadav for the second time since last evening.

The Trinamool chief and Yadav are apparently coordinating their efforts to extract financial packages for West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.

However, prior to her meeting with the Congress chief, Banerjee insisted that her demand for a three-year moratorium on payment of interest on central loans was not linked to her party's support to the UPA nominee in the Presidential polls.

"No, no, no. Support (to UPA in Presidential polls) is not linked to financial package to the state. Both are two different things," she told reporters.

"Whenever I come to Delhi, these kind of rumours and gossips are planted by some quarters. These are plantations. Plantations not of trees but plantation of rumours," she said, adding "I condemn this circulation of rumours," the Trinamool Congress chief said.

Banerjee said West Bengal was in a precarious situation financially due to the policies pursued by the previous Left Front government and hence she had sought a moratorium on payment of interest for three years.

She said the demand for moratorium was a year-old and not linked to the Presidential polls.

"I have sought a moratorium on payment of interest (on Central loans) for three years and this debt burden is not my creation. Unless there is a moratorium, how will we run the government," she said.

"Whatever the state earns goes in repayment of interest. It is a very precarious situation. Please don't link it with Presidential elections," Banerjee said.

Sources in Samajwadi Party said its leadership was inclined to support candidature of Mukherjee for the next President.

Yadav is understood to have told party MPs recently that he personally would prefer Mukherjee but a final decision could only be taken after Congress officially comes up with a name.

Sorry for the foul words...but mamta is a b***h. There are so many problems- the railways infested with accidents, the economy in doldrums and mamta has, for showing her clout, shot at each and every issue- from pensions to railway fare hikes to retail to even minor issues like president elections (as if it makes a BIIIIGGG difference). THank you bengal. Your policitcal legacy is so spectacular....from the lefts and commies who ruined us to their replacement- mamta who's holding the country hostage even more than them.

Mamta is doing all for vote... its is our fault.. we had given her a perception that by this she will get more votes..

Politicians are nothing then the benefactors on others work and opinion... its our bad luck that only our worst demands get their notice with the decided votebank attached..

until we are not going to change politicians will work in this way

    Getting serious

    Of the 3 new names,
    I would consider

A.P.J.Abdul Kalam : But kalam will run for President only if he is unopposed

So if it comes down to Somnath Chatterji
he is a very experienced Parliamentarian
40+ years Exp. (9 times MP)

And we must not forget he was the one who rebelled against his own party
because he believe that Nuclear Deal was in India's Interest,
he rose above party interest and supported the deal for which we was removed from the party.

He has never lost in his constituency in 45 years,
he is a honest man, i would vote for him blind folded any day.

Most of you have failed to read the script.

If mid term elections are to be held, the President will have the power to call which ever combination he wants and can actually determine the formation of a govt by using his pwers in a fractured mandate. So the most important thing for the so called third front is to have a President which is non congressee.

Mulayam and Mamta have already proven to be failures. The 18% quota for muslims as announced by SP has already failed the SC test. TMC is a bunch of baffoons who do not have any idea of administration. The more they delay the elections, more are the chances that they will lose the sentiments of the people and will be exposed as failures and cheats.

Four major states are facing elections in early 2013 including Gujrat. If mid term polls are held after Gujrat elections or are held in 2014, NAMO will be able to upset all the calculations of the so called third front which will never be able to come to power and Mulayam will never be able to become the PM.

The game is to first install a non congress candidate with known anti congress sentiments/dislikes to ensure that when it comes to make a choice, The President is free to decide. Presidential elections will happen before the monsoon session of parliament. After that bring down the govt on some flimsy ground during monsoon session so that the mid term elections are held along with the state elections in Gujrat. If SP & TMC fail to bring down UPA2 in monsoon session, they will get a chance only in winter session and that will be too late. Infact it will be better for NAMO to dissolve his assemble after monsoon session and call for early election in Gujrat to upset the game of Mulayam and Mamta. Polls within this year will ground NAMO to Gujrat and will also ensure that SP wins over 40 seats in UP. If SP wins above 40 seats in UP, Mulayam will have the largest number of seats in the so called third front which will make him the contender for PMship.

If the third front is able to cobble up 150 seats, they can claim a stake and ask congress to support them to form the govt to keep BJP out. The President will play a big role in such a situation. The best startegy for BJP will be to ensure that congress is not thrown out till end of this year. That will upset the apple cart of Mulayam and Mamta and leave the field clear for BJP. If the election are held after Gujrat elections, NAMO will help BJP sweep the polls and longer you delay the election, the more difficult it will be for TMC & SP to do better than their last performance.
