Oh for leisure, a perfect setting, for cliff chop assault after ice climbing/abseiling practices after a good 5 km run with battle load at 10500 ft ASL - it was a pain fox!

Would you have preferred a trade? I spent the better part of 5 years swimming around frigged and sometimes frozen waters in the North and Norwegian Seas.

Someone had to do SAR in that climate, because fisherman never stopped working

    Neither did electronic warfare groups.

And the ice didn't always stay solid. On the plus side, I got a very sweet puffy coat for my troubles:biggthumpup:.

The average temperature in the Norwegian sea is about 4 C, which isn't cold compared to what high altitude Indian troops have to face, but you guys aren't tromping through water either:mrgreen:. Go sit in the snow for an hour, then warm up and go for a dip in an ice bath and tell me which is worse.

I dunno. I like the cold:happy:, but my experience taught me that swimming in frozen seas was always colder then climbing frozen mountains. Of course you guys are dealing with a whole different experience then we are.

Temperatures in Norway range from +17 to -50C (that's no joke. You're reading it correctly), so we're good with the extremes too.

    ...

But if that's not bad enough, you're always free to vacation down in Queen Maud Land:D.

The roads around here are bad enough with all the snow and ice, but who knew there'd be other hazards too?

How often do you have heavy armor rolling around your neighborhood?

True story: there are more Nordic nations then just Norway. For instance, Denmark.

The Royal Danish Navy has been a regular contributor to NATO Operation Ocean Shield.

People love to drone on about US imperialism, foreigners mostly, but they never ask us how we, the citizens of the nation hosting the Americans, feel.

Implying I can think. I feel "pillage party" might be more apt.

Officially there's only a few hundred US Marines, USAF and USN personal on Norwegian soil, and a token amount of Army guys and gals as well. Marines make up the bulk of their numbers though. But despite their limited contingent versus nations like Poland or Germany which play host to thousands, out two nations have a long and storied history of cooperation.

From the Americans leasing our Skjold class corvettes, of which the design heavily influenced the future LCS ships.

To being widely suspected of manning not just radar stations like Globus II.

But also intelligence gathering platforms like FS Marjata (every iteration of intel gathering ships has been named FS Marjata).

    And even intelligence sites.

The USAF frequently trains with Norwegian Special Forces, in this case MJK.

And as seen in a picture set above, so to do the USMC.

We even store USMC gear in long-term storage. Norwegian soil is littered with subterranean cave complexes, some purpose built for military activities. Some house submarines, others tanks and some aircraft.

One such cave system houses a whole radar system, the Sindre II, which is retractable. The entire radar system can be lowered into a hardened underground complex. It's suspected the Americans help man it too.

What they lack in numbers, the Americans make up for in impact. Their limited numbers help prevent some of the issues that have dogged them in places like Okinawa and the Philippines, where criminal behaviors, negligence and general misdeeds have been an issue.

I personally view having the Americans around as a positive, but don't support increasing their numbers beyond the recently debated 300 Marines increase. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a Norwegian that thinks otherwise. We're pretty favorable to our longtime ally.
