Northrop Grumman in race for Navy aircraft order

    Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC), the US-based $34.9-billion global security systems and technology provider, is pitching for the Indian Navy’s order for surveillance aircraft and high altitude long-range unmanned aerial vehicles.

    “The Indian Navy had invited a request for information (RFI) in the middle of last year and we submitted our RFIs to them. We have submitted quotes for E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, airborne early warning and control aircraft. We are now waiting for the RFPs to be issued by the Indian Navy,â€￾ Northrop Grumman India managing Director, Gyanendra Sharma, said.

    Talking to Business Standard, Sharma said that Northrop Grumman has been trying to secure the ministry of defence’s orders for its products and technologies over the last four years. When the Navy came out with an RFI for surveillance aircraft last year, Northrop Grumman was one of the contenders, he said.

    The Navy intends to procure four surveillance aircraft. If Northrop Grumman wins the Navy order, India will be the second country in the world to fly the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye. Currently, only the US Navy uses one such aircraft, which completed its landing aboard the USS Truman (aircraft carrier) and began carrier suitability tests on February 3, 2011.

    The Indian Navy is planning to acquire 6-8 medium-range airborne early warning surveillance aircraft and high altitude long-range UAVs. The ministry of defence had floated RFIs for the surveillance aircraft and UAVs. While specifications for the medium-range surveillance aircraft require an operating range of over 350 nautical miles, the requirements for the UAV include a service ceiling above 40,000 feet and endurance of over 25 hours.

    The Navy’s requirements for surveillance aircraft assumed importance in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, in which Pakistan-based terrorists used the sea route to reach Indian soil.

    Tom C Trudell, manager, international business development, NGC, said “We have an order from the US Navy for supplying 75 E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft over a period of 12 years. So far, we have delivered five aircraft, of which one has been commissioned and other four are under tests.â€￾ He also added that apart from India, Northrop Grumman also plans to supply E-2D aircraft to the United Arab Emirates.

    The aircraft is capable of scanning a large area, detecting smaller objects and processing information quickly. The aircraft crew will be able to carry out these tasks through improved all-glass cockpits and tactical operator stations. The aircraft has a surveillance range of 300 nautical miles and can detect ships at a distance of 200 miles. However, E-2D would need to have a catapult-equipped aircraft carrier. Currently, the Indian Navy does not have such an aircraft carrier, Trudell noted.

    If the Navy actually decides to go for the E-2D, I really wonder how the Navy is going to make the Mig-29Ks and other Indian/Russian vessels interoperable with it.

    they will be used or acquired by the time IAC 2 and 3 arrives since both these carriers are catapult-equipped

    iac 3 ?? is it confirmed that it will be built ?? plzz post more info on it....

    Can the Phalcon AWACs be used on the aircraft carrier? Wouldn't IL-76 be too big?

    Firstly its Huge and Secondly If it has an Arrestor hook , I am Sure it is capable enough to move the Aircraft carrier with that hook with the power it lands, thirdly it needs atleast 450 m with thrust reversal to land,... You can have a Better Option, Make Naval SARAS as a Platform for the Indian navy AWAC,

    My question was about the interoperability, how vessels and aircraft from varying countries will be integrated. It will be one heck of a task.

    li 76 is far too big for even nimitz........we can have the E2d's and or even our Indian(the one on emb145 awacs) radar on a platform capable of operating from carriers.....

    Just some thoughts on the E-2D Hawkeye:
    1. For this aircraft to enter IN service, future aircraft carriers have to be catapult/EMALS equipped. That has not been confirmed in the public domain yet, though a decision may be in the works/taken already.
    2. The E-2D while certainly being a capable aircraft in its role, is not unique as an AEW & C aircraft. It is unique as a carrier-borne AEW & C aircraft. Which makes it a potent force multiplier only as a carrier-borne aircraft.
    3. If India decides not to/or is unable to fit a catapult/EMALS on future aircraft carriers, then it is quite pointless to acquire the E-2D.
    4. In case point 3 applies; then it is not critical. The envisaged role of the E-2D can be performed by shore based AEW & C aircraft, viz. the Phalcon or the DRDO Embraer platform. Of course those platforms will need to be modified/customised to perform that role over water which is doable. And have AAR capability which already exists.
    5. Summing up, the need/role for the E-2D in IN service is not critical, unless IN creates a doctrine for intercontinental/interoceanic deployment. Such a doctrine does not exist yet. There is only a "blue-water" doctrine, i.e. deep sea.

    Some other points have been raised by posters.
    One concerns capability to deploy the Phalcon in carrier-borne operation. That is impossible. Not even on 'Nimitz' class CVNs. By the time, India moves upto considering that class of ships, large aircraft carriers will be obsolete.
    Another proposal is to use the Saras on carriers. This is also impossible since the Saras is a small light airframe incapable of packing the equipment required and can never be re-incarnated as a carrier-borne aircraft.
    The Embraer similarly cannot be modified for carrier operations, size, lack of power, undercarriage etc.

    Summing up the previous para; carrier aircraft are custom designed aircraft with greater reserve of engine power (preferably twin engine), extremely quick response flying and engine controls, more compact and strengthened airframe, extremely strong undercarriage.

    Actually every carrier-borne aircraft is designed for controlled crash-landings (which is every landing). And a Naval aircraft never takes off or lands on the carrier. It is launched and recovered.

    p.s. The N-LCA has a lot of work to be done before it will don the mantle of a real carrier-borne aircraft.

    the concept of large a/c cbgs is not going anywhere anytime soon......
    I understand that todays modern destroyes and nuke subs project alot of power.......but the point is they judt can't do anything more than that!!!! It u got a major millitary operation be it in anypart of the world , u have to have an aircraft carrier nearby.......

    There is no IAC-3 as it is not confirmed but only "likely". There are going to be 2 indigenous carriers that will be IAC-1 and IAC-2 the second of which has been officially stated. Nothing about a 4th carrier in IN is mentioned. Nor is there any need for a 4th carrier in the Navy since we operate only 3 theaters of combat operations: the south, east and west commands.

    Also, there is no information on whether the carriers will be catapult equipped.

    IF E-2D wins at all, then they will operate it from land based stations rather than carrier operations for now.

    I am more of the idea of that JV HAL formed with SAAB to make AEW for IN carriers.

    iac 2 wont be stobar like iac1......it will be catobar.....

    They are not going in for a larger a/c just to accomodate more jets......!!!!
