NOT HAPPY WITH INDIA BEING LABELED ONE OF THE LARGEST IMPORTERS OF DEFENSE EQUIPMENT IN WORLD: ARUN JAITLEY

Union minister Arun Jaitley, who was appointed the Defence minister just days ago after Manohar Parrikar stepped down to become the chief minister of Goa, met Russia’s Minister of Trade and Industry Denis Manturov at Manekshaw Centre on Friday. Manturov is on a two-day visit to India to focus on issues related to the $1-billion Indo-Russian deals including Kamov-226 helicopters, the progress of Project 1135-6 frigates for the Indian Navy and T-90 tanks for the Indian Army, among others. Soon after the meeting, Arun Jaitley said, “India is one of the largest importers of defense equipment in the world, and this definitely is not a label we are happy with.” Addressing a conference on India-Russia Military and Industrial cooperation, Jaitley called for deeper bilateral engagement in defense production. He said that Russia should at least facilitate manufacturing of parts and subsystems, which are needed in large numbers and where the requirement is recurring in nature.
According to FE Bureau, “Besides meeting with the new defense minister Arun Jaitley, three sets of meetings have been planned for the visiting minister. He will meet officials of Indian Army, Navy and the Air Force. The interaction between the Russian side and the Indian armed forces, as well as the industry, is to see how all can work together as a support system.”
On the day, two agreements were signed at the conference between India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation and United Engine Corporation for the long-term supply of spares and technical assistance for Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft for five years.
Saying that these moves are part of the larger defense and economic agenda chalked out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India, FM Jaitley said, “PM, after forming the government, launched the Make in India initiative; defense production is identified as one of the key areas under this.”
Earlier today, Defence Minister Jaitley while intervening in the Lok Sabha during a debate had said that the Indian armed forces were fully prepared to meet any challenge and asked the Opposition to be very careful about conveying the impression that they were not due to lack of procurement.

Politicians earns $$$$ via Kick Backs for buying Foriegn Mall. Hence, defence manufacturing has been neglected in India. Babus don't want to kill the cash rich cow.

OK you are not happy with it. Made for a good headline.

Now what are you going to do about it?

I was expecting a lot more from BJP regarding defence ministry tbh. So far its been relatively disappointing.

I guess mass cull and replacement of babudom (compared to other sectors) here would compromise a lot of national secrets. Its not a rock and hard place that I would envy being between.

At least there is more re-routing to private industry so the production side has definitely improved manifold and will continue to do so. I hope next dedicated DM is one with a big enough boot and kick strength to propel this model further.

1 ] Brother, It will take decades....The Private Players are in it for the Money....They won't just jump in and blindly invest money unless they had a strong foundation and a very compelling incentive. Making an 'industry' as you describe it takes decades really.... It does.

2 ] No, we don't have a lot of money... Especially for weapons...This government is Focused on Economic Rejuvenation and Infrastructure Development...If fact their long term goal is to cut the defence budget by localising Production.

3] Private Players aren't the 'Magicians' a lot of people think them to be....Most of them are just Manufacturers...The few that are into R&D are dependent on PSUs for their experience and Test Facilities.... Almost No 'Private Player' in India has experience in fields like Heavy Frontline warship R&D, High Power Radar Systems (Mechanical or ES) , Underwater Weapons System (Torpedoes and Stuff), Fighter Jets...Etc....The Private Industry is now mostly a supplier of sub-systems. Seldom will you come across a Private Player that can develop and manufacture big advance weapon systems from the ground up...On it's own. Of course our own policies are responsible for this.

    ==================================================================

    IMHO

If this administration is serious about reducing our dependency on foreign muscle and implements proper policies toward it...I expect our country to be self sufficient except for aerospace by 2050.

Our Aerospace Industry from the way things are now will never take off...We find it difficult to make a light fighter...Let alone make our own FGFAs or C-17s or P-8s... Personally I think even in 2040-2050 we will still be buying foreign planes.

to achieve something u should stop ring the "Nahe ka Ghanta" .... 1] there r no free lunch ... its a business (reliance, tata, LNT, mahindra etc) hv they all jumped blindly into this business ... pls read post of vstol jockey ... ask him, , in how much time can he put his fighter jet in production
2] what is defence budget for? ... just to pay salary for defence forces ....

3] no one jumps in R&D in first go ... u start by being a manufacturers ... do JV

this all can go super faster with support of gov.... previous gov.s were only interested in kickbacks

    Hi,

India starts many projects in 80s like LCA and Arjun but still there is very slim chance for induction into armed forces even Arjun declared unfit for I.A requirements plus Tejas still struggling, What I believe it is not political interference but armed forces have no faith on local production due to kick backs and and lack of sophisticated technology along with very slow production lines.
    Regards.
