NEW DELHI: Suspected Pakistan-affiliated operatives today hacked the official website of the elite National Security Guard (NSG) and defaced it with a profanity-laden message against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The hacking attempt was noticed early today and the URL -www.nsg.gov.in – was blocked soon after by the counter-terror force from its headquarters here, officials said.

“Indian NSG Commandos hacked Pakistan Zindabad,” the group, which calls itself ‘Alone Injector,’ wrote.

In its message, the group denied that Indian Army’s surgical strikes ever took place.

Official sources said the hacking attempt could have been carried out by Pakistan-affiliated hackers, though they were still trying to ascertain exact details in this regard. The matter has been brought to the notice of the National Informatics Centre (NIC), and “remedial action” is being taken.

The NSG was raised in 1984 as the federal contingency unit to undertake counter-terror and counter-piracy operations. Its website gives out basic information about the force, its origin and operations.

Today’s hacking of the NSG website isn’t the first high-profile hack in recent times. Just days ago, cyber attackers from Pakistan compromised the websites of the Cochin and Trivandrum airports. A group of hackers from Kerala responded by hacking Sialkot airport’s (in Pakistani’s Punjab province) website.

In addition, a group of hackers called Legion was in the news last month for compromising email and Twitter accounts of several major public figures, including beleagured liquor baron Vijay Mallya and Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi.

NSG site hacked, defaced with profanity-filled message aimed at PM Modi
An image of police thrashing civilians was also uploaded on to the site's homepage with the accompanying text calling for "Free Kashmir".

The National Security Guard website was hacked on Sunday by a group that identified itself as ‘Alone Injector’. The hacker group defaced the site with an abusive message, targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An image of police thrashing civilians was also uploaded on to the site’s homepage with the accompanying text calling for “Free Kashmir”. The group behind the hack could be based out of Pakistan as references were made to the country’s intelligence-gathering agency, ISI. Pro-Pakistan slogans were also raised. The website soon went offline once authorities took notice of the hack.

Interestingly, the hackers did not take down the entire site and retained most of the elements on the page. The frame with links to other pages were left unaffected as the main page was replaced with their message.

In December, hacker group legion targeted Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s and the party’s official Twitter handles. Profanity-filled messages were posted from both the handles. Days later, Twitter accounts of a few influential journalists were also targeted by the same group. They promised to release confidential information pertaining to the Congress party in the new year.

India really needs to keep up when it comes to Cyber security and warfare. Pakistan is one thing, I'm more worried about India in regards to China and its massive Cyberwarfare capabilities.

Absolutely correct but let's not get overly concerned by this incident, if anyone has visited the NSG site prior to this incident they would know it was ancient and almost unused by the force, certainly it was not up to date or maintained.

    Basically a very easy target.

No matter what we do... Perhaps we won't be keeping the Chinese at bay... Their Cyber Force is competent and Mature... If they managed to breach Lockheed Martin.... Then Forget defense... We will have to sharpen our cyber offense and have the Ability to retaliate...so there is some minimal deterrence factor...
