Gunmen Have Attacked And Entered Kamra Air Base In Pakistan, Thought To House Nuclear Weapons - Business Insider

Gunmen have attacked and entered a Pakistan air force base, according to Reuters.

The target is the Minhas Air Base in the town of Kamra, located around 40 miles outside Islamabad. The attacked is believed to be conducted by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) — reports in the Pakistan press have suggested they were planning attacks in retaliation for upcoming military action.

A three hour gun battle is reportedly raging between security guards and attackers.

Time Magazine's Omar Waraich points out that this is the third attack on the base since 2007.

Worryingly, the militants may have good reason to attack the base. Waraich says that the site is home of Pakistan's nascent drone program, and a Telegraph report from 2009 said the site was thought to house Pakistan's nuclear weapons. Saeed Shah wrote at the time:

Pakistan’s nuclear sites are tightly guarded. While experts do not think that terrorists could seize an actual nuclear bomb — the weapons are not kept in a useable form, with parts dispersed — it is possible that they could cause a fire or explosion inside a nuclear site, or perhaps seize radioactive material.

UPDATE: 2 soldiers and 6 militants have been left dead from the fighting, Reuters reports.

I Think either taliban didn't really know how to train their fighters or they have send B-grade fighters to attack Pakistani airbase. Talibani fighters should have perform much more better.

They are not sending the B-Grade fighters, but they are rehearsing for the finals. Every time they are doing more successful they are becoming attacking on the base.

I don't think so. They perform somewhat well in ambushes in mountain regions, but firefights inside military base, against well-trained troops?

You are forgetting one thing, these fighters were also trained by there well-trained army. Isn't it? now they are utilizing the same skills but the only difference is they are less in number at the time of attack at base. Did you forget, how they blow up the entire prisoners jail and evacuate almost all criminals out of that.

Which would be? Original Taliban were supplied by CIA, but I don't know about any training given to them.

Might be some Army personnel support there tactics and training to these groups. Might be supporting them for arms and ammunitions. Might be providing financial support. Attacking a base with so much accuracy is not possible without internal help, else these were burnt with bullets at the entry gate only.

Do you think US is fool to send its citizens involved directly in confrontation with USSR during cold war era. It was Pakistan Army & ISI funded by US.
