Pakistan is a 'black hole' for US aid

WASHINGTON: US lawmakers of both Democratic and Republican parties have slammed the Obama administration's request for $2.4 billion for Pakistan, calling it a "black hole" where the US has "sunk" $24 billion over the last decade.

"Pakistan is like a black hole for American aid," Gary Ackerman, top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs panel on the Middle East and South Asia said during a hearing Wednesday.

"Our tax dollars go in, our diplomats go in - sometimes, our aid professionals go in - sometimes, our hopes go in, our prayers go in," he said. "Nothing good ever comes out."

Alleging that Islamabad continues to pursue its national interest at America's expense and that of its allies, Ackerman said: "Pakistan continues to shelter, directly support and sponsor terrorists."

"Officially acknowledging this indisputable fact might be grossly impolitic; but that doesn't make it less true. American standing in Pakistani public opinion is terrible and getting worse," he said.

Similarly Republican Dana Rohrabacher blasted US support for Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who he said was taking "marching orders" from Pakistan.

"We should cut Pakistan off of every cent because it has been used for evil purposes, including killing American troops," he said.

However, a State Department official testifying at the hearing suggested cutting off aid would be short-sighted.

"Our current discussions with the Pakistanis on how best to pursue our common interests will take time to resolve, and it's not easy right now to provide satisfying answers to some questions," Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Daniel Feldman said in written testimony.

But "the fact of the matter is, is that we've been able to kill more terrorists on Pakistani soil than just about any place else," he said citing President Barack Obama's words after the death of Osama bin Laden last May. "We could not have done that without Pakistani cooperation."

So really, every American including Obama who went into Pakistan has returned bad. Wonder if Mit Romney ever went into Pakistan.

Do you have a source mate?
I've not heard this news before and the $4 billion figure seems preposterous, perhaps it's for a different reason.

    but anyway...
Depends who the aid goes too.
GoP... no-one other then GoP will ever see the money.
Army... A fraction given where needed, the rest on more equipment.

This is precisely why their WOT failed, wrong idea of how to about it, no regard for civilian life and an appetite for confrontation.
    Idiots.

They Should have stopped Aid decade back. Then there would have been fun. But the endgame would be quick. This way endgame is prolonged. And US have hammered them to too. To those who were dancing with War Shoes in Pak, this is good lesson.

    Thanks.

Bloody GoP, as if $1 billion robbed from the average Pakistani wasn't enough, they'd like to rob us of $4 billion.

    Depends.

When the US announces aid, it's either military, ie goes directly to the military, for compensation, and war effort and equipment.
With GoP, it's civilian aid, that is meant to go on education, health, development of infrastructure... but it always ends up in Swiss Banks.

Pakistan has lot of capabilities back in 1960’s. They were far advanced compared to during those days. But they lost their path after 1965 war. That is result of boasting and pride. Even now young Pak’s have great capabilities, only there is no means for them to execute it. They sincerely lack R&D and production. And with this jokers in power it is never going to happen. They are very good in distracting common people by feeding them with no existent war with India, there by shield their incapability in spurring growth and development.

These jokers need to be whipped in Taliban style, lolz.

The problem of the pakistan is the blood sucking vampire called pakistani army.

pakistan have no future it will be taken over by the extremists and a mullah will head it.

Its in the interest of the world be it USA, Israel, India and even china to take over its nukes.
